Apologies if I've misunderstood, but a Torsen diff is mechanical? What was the extra option they were talking about - a plate diff? Welded? They've stated for a while that a Torsen would be standard with the option of a plate diff

Torsen diff is a torque biasing differential, they work great if you can keep both tyres on the ground, lift a wheel and they spin the torque away to fresh air.
The option would be a plated diff, which can transfer torque even if one wheel is off the ground, that can be set as a 1 way, 1.5 way or 2 way depending on how you design the ramps that control the plate load charicteristics.
Subaru's use R160 and R180 rear diff units, Nissan RWD have used R200, they all come from the same family of units which is a Nissan component. The number is the diameter of the Crown Wheel, bigger is stronger but heavier, and with a RWD car you would need a larger rear diff unit than an AWD car with the same overall engine torque, so it will be interesting to see what unit they have chosen.

Good info, thanks for that I assume these also offer more (/quicker/more custom) full locking hence why they're favoured in drifting? I can't imagine they're tripoding much?

I wonder if TV forums are full of people saying 'you can get a nice used CRT at cash4U on the High St for £30, why bother with a new £5000 LCD?'

Stuart said: robsprocket said: So a buyer has £25000 burning a hole in their pocket and has to decide whether to go for a new GT86 or a 6 month old Nissan 370Z GT with under 1000 miles on the clock....hmmmmm.
I'm sure the Toyota is good, but £25000+ lol. Wasn't the price originally supposed to be around £20k. Ah excellent. I thought the thread was looking a bit weird without the "but I could buy a [insert chosen alternative for about £25k here] and it'd be much better" comment. All's well with the world. A fair point. Lost entirely when 'Director Bloke' wades in and makes it. Tongue in cheek or not. Are you not able to watch from the stands and let us mere mortals wage our pithy wars, make our inane comments and accept that some old cliches will be wheeled out time and again? Moderation is one thing, but pouncing on those who consciously or otherwise perpetuate discussion, albeit tired, is not necessary from a director's PoV. Is it? This said, after your numerous point scoring retorts. Good article/vid as ever from CH.

Perhaps you should be thankful there are 'suckers' out there buying brand new cars so you can enjoy them cheaper.

A setup for proper drifting wouldnt work on a road car, you would want it to be relatively slack preload with fairly gentle braking ramps and maybe a more agresive power ramp to make it less understeer biased. A lot of the subaru OEM plated LSD units are relatively softly pre-loaded with an equal ramp setup under braking/power, they work really well with a front torsen diff and variable rate plated centre diff. Lots of diff options for these Nissan units, so should be fun to work with even if you buy a normal torsen version and want to do a bit of your own tuning, if they have used this family of diff assemblies.

Really liked that video, i don't doubt that the joy Chris was showing was genuine - and for a £25k car to get that response from someone in his privileged position it must be good.
I can't buy a new one, but they'll certainly be on the list as a used buy in a couple of years.
Who knows, maybe we're looking at the de facto answer to all the £2k what car threads in 8 years time.

infernal said: bunch of bloody spastics Please do not use that term in a derogatory way. You may be surprised to know that this really rather offensive to most people. Even more so to those that have friends/family with cerebral palsy. >>>From the Wikipedia<<< The current understanding of the word is well-illustrated by a BBC survey in 2003, which found that "spastic" was the second most offensive term in the UK relating to disability (retard was deemed most offensive).[2] In 2007, Lynne Murphy, a linguist at the University of Sussex, described the term as being "one of the most taboo insults to a British ear".

Excellent video. Well done to PH for shoehorning one in on a press day such as that. The interior may be a bit naff, but maybe there will be an option for just a single colour, without the accents. robsprocket said: Just checked Broadspeed.com and a brand new Nissan 370Z is £25662.
