This Z3M is becoming quite strange although if I do get the chasis no. that should clear some things up. Its registered as Sept 00 but it was registered on an R plate.

Well as its in the public domain (and I can't get there till Sunday am) here goes...

Its in Maidenhead, been owned by the seller for 3 years. Doesn't have much history and he had it serviced at local garages.

Chaps, do your worst! (And if someone wants to go and have a look on my behalf and report back...)

I mentioned my new purchase in the £1-5k bargains thread last week but didn't collect it until today, and at £5,200 strictly it doesn't qualify for that thread. So I'm posting some pics here instead.

Last 545i Touring I had, I only kept for 6 months because I didn't gel with it. This one is far more me, in spec and colour scheme, but the price meant it was a no-brainer. Lovely as the E46 330i's engine is, it's not effortless like a V8. And I wanted the space and refinement of a 5-series once more. I toyed with the idea of another Audi S6 (C5 shape Avant) and nearly bought one, but I'm glad it slipped from my grasp now.

All good barging adventures should involve calling the AA on the way home (my E39 540i Touring made the last 100 or so miles of its first journey with me on the back of an AA truck, and I still went on to love it). This time, I got to within a few miles of home, stopped to fill up with petrol and noticed steam from under the bonnet. A coolant pipe had come loose and been slashed by the fan. Fortunately the AA man was with me in 15 minutes, tried to get a replacement from the main dealer (none in the country, damn) and instead effected a temporary repair which allowed me to get home and should be fine for a few weeks.

When I viewed it, the panoramic sunroof didn't work. I wasn't bothered about it and knew they were fairly unreliable anyway, so used that to knock the price down; however, googling during the week revealed there's a simple fix which disables the rear glass tilt mechanism but otherwise leaves it fully functional. And I have already carried that out, in about half an hour, for free smile A true bargain barge.

Mate popped round today with his rolling-restoration Porsche:

(photos aren't my forte, sorry)

Lovely wee thing, looks great. And makes a reasonably convincing racket for a four-pot.

Consequently, this early evening with the sun still blazing, I'm looking at pint-sized mid-engined two seaters.

It would really have to be a 6 I think:

Yes, yes, I know, completely awful...slow, rubbish, rusty, hairdresser, will fall apart, no place on this forum let alone this Thread...
And yet...they're handsome little buggers, aren't they. scratchchin

Well done sir, a serious bargain. Looked at these early 545's last year but they were a bit more expensive then!

Whats the mileage?

135,000, so I fully intend to take out the BMW extended drivetrain warranty. Zwolf has mentioned the coolant pipe in the vee of the block which corrodes and leaks; I think the warranty is prudent.

Yes, but for how long, IIRC, the ///M Fünf 'yoda' aka GP once wrote that rebuilt EDC shocks don't last that long.............................
They certainly don't have a good track record. IIRC it's something to do with the seals on each unit which are formed from the casing itself. Therefore, when they wear out... And you cannot simply chuck in a rubber pipe seal from B&Q and hope for the best.

Considering the other one was pretty mint apart from a couple of scuffs on the bodywork is this somewhat massively overpriced?

I'd phone to check on this, as the Driveline warranty covers the engine, but only the Internally lubricated parts of it.

BMW Warranty Driveline said:
Engine

All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:

Cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, valves (excluding decarbonisation, burnt or pitted valves and valve seats), valve springs, valve guides, camshaft and bearings, camshaft followers, hydraulic lifters, timing gears, timing chains, piston and piston rings, cylinder liners and liner seals, connecting rods and small end bearings, gudgeon pins, crankshaft and crankshaft bearings, oil pump and oil pump drive, distributor driveshaft, flywheel, starter motor ring gear, engine management sensors.
