Potential need for a decent sized estate car. Poking about on Autotrader in the sub-grand bargain basement.

I need loadspace, dependency and zero bork.

Recommendations?

Less than a grand? 500 quid territory has plenty of potential, I'm thinking V40 or suchlike.

shoutLen V40.....any booby traps?

I know I'm not Len, but the V40 is IME so far unborkable. I've fitted a few bulbs, replaced a radiator hose clip, a full exhaust system (with CAT £265) and a wishbone (£75 done) in 16 months and 14,000 miles. Other than those fixes it has been treat with willful neglect and still refuses to die, starts first time everytime even when left parked for a week or two. I think the ones with the GDI engines (you can tell by the rocker cover) are prone to coking.

It's comfortable too.

The biggest PITA that doesn't affect its bigger Ovlov estate brothers is the access to the load area which is more like a huge hatchback boot than the traditional estate flat entry. Saying that you can fit an awful lot of stuff in it.

V40 booby-traps?

Avoid the GDi petrol at all costs.

The indirect injection diesels are slower than evolution (but hugely economical).

Other than that, it's only the terminal dullness and torpor to overcome.

These days, sums under a grand don't buy you anything which people want. And people always want estate cars.

A Mondeo would be the obvious choice, but sub-grand you're really into the dross. My recommendations for a cheap estate would start with what I consider to be the best all-round production car of all time: the Peugeot 406 HDi estate. Your budget will test such a purchase though.

After that, if you can stand the absolutely horrific styling (in fact, what styling?) the MK1 Citroen C5, with the same HDi engine as the Pug.

The risky mule - you'd want written confirmation that it wasn't built on a Monday, a Friday, or after lunch on any other day - would be a Laguna estate. There are plenty about which have demonstrated an ability to complete stellar mileages.

Sorry there's nothing sexy in my list though :-(

Which is the GDi, the 1.8 Carisma lump?

Er, no. There is far too much bork potential there, and nowhere near the mile accumulation to warrant a diesel.

And BTW, looking at the 'trade, a grand is more than enough based on what I can see.

I'd read on the thread about your "inverse Midas" potential, but I'd assumed it was light-hearted joshing, exaggerated for comic effect. Bloody hell.

Meant to say, there is a Facebook app that tells you what Muppet character you'd be.

Mine was the Swedish Chef.

They trying to tell me something?

Anyway.

Very bumpy ride, tramlines badly and terrible visibility.

Other than that. Very nice smile

Excellent engine, good looking car. And they seem to be pretty good value. Surprisingly practical as well.

In other news... Here's the new snotter:

No garage queen and certainly no show winner, but it goes ok, looks ok and is very, very, very brown inside. Brown plastics, brown carpet and brown velour. All different shades, obv.

Remarkably good fun to punt around.

The tramlining and bumpiness is largely RFT related and therefore easy to improve on.

I'm aware of the runflat issues, I assume it's no problem to swap to normal tyres and keep a can or two of tyre goop in the boot and a decent breakdown service subscription. I fancy something low and quick but with decent practicality and non-scary running costs. Seems to fit the bill nicely.

Slightly unusual interior combo but I quite like it.

Ferry, yes the Mitsubishi Carisma (for it is that car from which the S/V40 were derived) engine.

Of the various 1.8s, one is over 1,800cc (1,840 iirc), that's the GDi.

The 1,796cc is borkless. Shared with the contemporary Laguna MkI I think it was.

The 2.0t would be my pick of the bunch, with either gearbox. I haven't come across a T4 that hasn't led a very hard life, the extra power is too much for that chassis, the ~160 ponies of the one rung lower works well and seems to get totally overlooked by most in contrast.

It's better on fuel than the 2.0 NA too.
