Back on topic, the wifes E61 525i is on 17" wheels, non RFT's and standard suspension and IMO has a near perfect combination of ride quality and handling for a car of it's size. I'm sure it would look better on 18" wheels but I'm not happy about the negative affect that would likely have so it's staying as it is.
My Z4 is probably the hardest car I've been in that is meant to be a day to day car, but I get used to it.
It's perfectly fine on smooth roads, really nice.
But the problem is really UK roads. Speed bumps to try slow you down, despite them being smoother to ride over AT the speed limit than under it, pot holes everywhere, dumps, knocks, scrapes, bad repairs, grooves from shoddy pipe laying...
Bring back good roads I say!
Ride quality is as much a function of the roads and in my view the roads need bringing up to a standard first before we really judge our cars.
If we always change cars to match the roads, then we'll all be driving SUV type stuff as the roads become like off-road tracks!

It was quite funny when my brother said his S-line A4 was hard riding, it was like a magic carpet. I don't think he was ready for how crappy the Z4 ride actually is when the road gets a bit rough!
I generally have wheels that are not round any more. And that is to do with the roads not the stiffness of the car.

Not only do I think massive wheels look utterly ridiculous but they are also usually much heavier too. Take my 17s shod with modest but perfectly decent 225/45 tyres - just under 19kgs per corner with non run flats. Now take the rear tyres of a 19" M sported up version - often a 318d/320d/320i with half the power. 10kgs more per wheel and tyre!! The front aren't as bad but still weigh a lot more. That a huge amount of rotating mass. Then there's the cost. And the lack of tyre choice. And the extra environmental impact.
I just don't get it - it's a fad that I sincerely hope fades away but I fairly sure it is here to stay.

ps. Those unsightly black doughnut-shaped balloons surrounding the shiny round status symbols are pneumatic tyres and are quite useful.

The guy I sold my 335 to was shocked at how hard the ride was he owned a Z4! said the 335 was far worse and he didn't expect it to be that bad and it was an se model....still bought it though It was quite funny when my brother said his S-line A4 was hard riding, it was like a magic carpet. What wheels?Mines and SE with M Sport suspension but 17" wheels on non run flats. Uber comfy but still grip well.

Increasing the track width or the offset of the wheels would fix that. Larger diameter wheels would look no better if they still had the same width/offset as above.I think big wheels won't go away anytime soon. You're right. Next time I order a BMW, I'm going to stick with the big wheels but I'm definitely going to tick the "smooth roads" option. Bring back good roads I say!

You're right. Next time I order a BMW, I'm going to stick with the big wheels but I'm definitely going to tick the "smooth roads" option. Bring back good roads I say!

Haha. I have seen some cars which look so frumpy and boring with the standard wheels. As soon you upgrade the wheels to 18" or above 5 spoke alloys the car looks amazing.
