I've found similar with VAG on goodwill, if it doesn't have a FSH with them or you bought it from a non main-dealer they refuse to help unless your prepared to argue.
So got on both probably. Think we are going to have to fight (and probably loose), have suggested work take legal advice, at least from the Citizen's Advice Bureau. Forgot to say in the earlier post but Skoda also said cost of a new engine over £5000 + fitting!!! Car only worth about 8k...

If they are hopeless someone has suggested getting a remanufactured (not reconditioned) from this company, probably about 2k, just wondering if anybody has any experience of their work:

If it goes bad for you, could you do it (engine change) yourself? You need a few tools and a ramp, with an engine hoist, but it's not really much of a job. Maybe you know someone with a workshop?
A good motor out of a crasher, and you're good to go.
Just a thought...

Edited for punctuation, before the PH written english police see it...

New development: work can't find the service history so I think that they're not going to get anywhere with Skoda. To be fair if Skoda are going to charge £5000+ for a remanufactured engine (1.9 stopped being made some time ago I believe to make way for the 1.6CR) it was going to take an awful lot of goodwill to bring the cost down to the 2040+vat Ivor searle would charge for a remanufactered engine (500 less if old engine can be used by them- I think that's unlikely!)....

Another new development: service sheet from garage states engine has been flushed each time it has been serviced. VAG state this invalidates the warranty and can cause unit injectors to fail and pistons to seize and send con-rods though them and I've had this backed up by a knowledgeable friend. Work is going to have a discussion with the garage in question but I don't suspect it will go anywhere helpful...
