i need some concrete facts on the process involved.

i have done a bit of research and come up with different opinions?

importing from northern ireland is the more simple option, some people say that an ni mot is perfectly acceptable in the uk for taxing the vehicle. others say you need to get a uk mot, then tax in the uk, and even possibly get a uk number plate?? i have had ni cars in the past with ni plates in the uk? im also told the ni v5 is not acceptable in the uk??

the other issue is legality for driving any cars back from the port to surrey? in theory you can drive a car without tax and mot to a mot station, or a place where work will be carried out on the car to obtain an mot?? but im not sure a 200 miles drive counts??

does any1 have concrete facts on the import process from ni to uk.

the same goes for importing cars from southern ireland, where i am pretty sure due to the completely different reg numbers etc, you certainly have to re register the car in the uk and get mot and tax. and im pretty sure its illegal to drive the car in the uk without re registration (although how does this work, as surely ni residents could drive the car in the uk??, does this only apply to residents??)

many thanks for any info

Northern Ireland is in the UK, the Republic of Ireland isn't.

NI MOT & tax is valid for the UK, but possibly does'nt show up on the police system, NI has been a black hole regards this.

Eire cars will require an MOT & re-reg at DVLA local office

I was looking into this a while ago.

For Republic of Ireland, you Insure the car on its VIN plate number, then take it to an MOT station in UK. Once you have that certificate you take all the documents you have for the car to a DVLA office. There is a registration fee and you pay for the TAX then they send you the new REGISTRATION document and TAX DISC with the UK reg plate they have given you.

All that jazz

Does anyone know what truth (if any) there is in the highlighted bit?

yeah sorry i know ni is part of the uk just worded it wrong.

so do we think an ni car could be driven from port back to storage etc legally if its insured on the vin???

seems a bit of a grey issue!

Whilst that is true, it over-simplifies the situation somewhat (with regards to this topic).

Even though NI is part of the UK, the DVLA (mainland GB) is a different organsiation to the DVA (NI version).

I don't see why you can't insure it on the NI reg number and drive it home as you would when buying a used car from any other part of the UK.

I don't know whether or not you'd ping an ANPR camera because of a NI reg, but so long as you've your insurance certificate with you then you shouldn't have a problem if stopped. I had a NI reg on a 911 for years and never had a problem (although it was registered with the DVLA in Swansea, come to think of it)

Yes. Much like English cars being brought here. Insure them and drive home. When the MOT is up, just MOT it again.

Although our MOT is done at an MOT centre which there are only a few rather than garages. For example, you can't get an MOT at kwik fit in NI.

it also says part of the registration process requires a type approval cert?? is this something that is easy to get hold of?? especially for cars that may already be a jap import etc before it is then imported to uk from ireland??

Having been stopped by plod a few times when travelling between UK & NI in NI cars this was certainly the case until recently. If you re-reg the car in GB with dvla they issue a new MOT cert.

Not an issue if its over 10 years old or already already been reg'd in Europe (Eire)

ok thats good news, what about if its less than 10yrs old??

so am i right in thinking for an ni car, you can literally just insure it, then drive it back in the uk as long as its got ni tax and mot? then when you need to renew tax for the car, you re register it in the uk and get a uk mot??

but with a roi car, it has to be trailored, and re registered before you can use it at all.

how about if you buy a car from roi just to break for parts. do you need to inform dvla at all, or hmrc??

so if the car is under 10 years old but already been registered in europe then you still dont need any type approval forms to register the car?

Do not know about Eire vehicles but had an interesting experience buying a car from NI..........

I bought a car from NI 2 years ago when it was 9 yrs old. Registered, taxed, and MOT'd in NI, and on NI plates.
Thought to myself 'all part of UK, so no problem'
This was mainly true and as expected I had no problem putting a private UK plate on the car (purchased from DVLA).

It wasn't until 6 months after purchase when my toad tax renewal came through at approx £400 that I got a bit worried. (Should have been £220). When I queried it with DVLA I was told that as far as they were concerned the car had been imported into the UK after X date and therefore road tax would be applied at the 'imported vehicle' rate!
I argued that NI WAS UK but they were having none of it.
Eventually I realised that I was getting nowhere so as a last resort I changed my tack. I told them that the car had merely been on holiday for 3 years as it was originally supplied new (and registered in the UK! WTF!!!)by a dealer in Brighton! Fortunately I had the original purchase receipts and documentation to support this, which they reluctantly accepted and reduced my RFL fee to the 'normal' rate!
Sorted!
Lesson to self....Do your homework!

On the first bit, that is exactly right. I think you just send the NI log book off to Swansea and it comes back with a GB V5C. When you re-tax it, it will then have a GB tax disc, then when you get a new MOT you can take the old disc out the window and carry on as normal. As for the reg, you can either keep the ageless NI one or you can ask the DVLA for a new one, I think there is just an admin fee and they will give you a random age related one (this is something they do for people who have had their cars cloned or dislike them for any valid reason) so you don't have to buy a cherished plate.

Buying from the Republic is a different game. You can insure on the VIN with some insurers, then you drive back, MOT it for the first time, then take £55+ the first year's tax to the DVLA and get it registered here. No need to trailer a working car and you need the VIN insurance to register it anyway. If you buy a ROI car to break for parts you don't need to do anything, for the car to be registered at all it needs an MOT. I just registered a car from Sweden, the DVLA was the easiest bit, main issue was finding an insurer who does VIN cover on classics and getting a LHD car to UK MOT standards, which is not an issue here.

i have trade insurance so hoping they will insure on the vin? would be a bloody pain if they didnt

with regards to above poster and road tax issue, cars from ni are now seens as not even imported and can be used on ni road tax and mot until they run out. so i cant see any issues there, but could be an issue with republic cars ??

need to speak with dvla about that one i suppose

Resurrecting this thread as I am just going through this process at the moment. The car in question was being sold by a dealer in Belfast. Both HPI and my insurance company recognised the car by its (Irish) reg number. The only checks which failed because the car was a non GB car were the "my car check" stolen vehicle type checks.

The dealer said he had to give me all of the V5 doc not just the tear off strip, and the road tax is due at the end of the month. So I'm about to spend some quality time on the phone with the DVLA to work out which order to do things in so that I have the right paperwork to get a new tax disc and get the car registered in my name in the next two weeks.

The NI MOT expires in August - it looks like a little A5 swimming certificate from school laugh
