Interesting that it's a 2015 target launch. Lets assume for a minute that the planets line up and Lotus pull the grand plan off and the new Elise comes in at 35k for a sub 1000kg 300bhp car (ok it won't but lets assume it happens) then the new Caterham will have to be bloody good not to end up another 21.
If that Elise comes, it will be £45-£55k. Not a chance in hell it will be £35k so this new Caterham (and the Ginetta) would have a bit of space.Re 21
The only thing wrong with the 21 was basing it on a seven chassis. This forced many compromises on the design. A far better (and proven) chassis was available from Spyder in the form of their Lotus Elan and Excel replacement chassis.
Re a new design
Plenty already exist. TVR Tuscan, Cerbera or Sagaris for example. A deal with Murtaya might be very interesting. The Evante would be a very logical extension of the Caterham marque as would an update of the 21 or even a 2+2 version of it, just as the Elan plus2 was a 2+2 version of the Elan.
