No it's not a direct car comparison. But this isn't a balls out drivers car (think elise). It's a compromise. I think as an overall "which would make me happier to own". I think I'd compromise a bit more handling, for desirability, comfort, and style.
All cars are a compromise, every single one. The Elise is a great drivers car and the Jag a supreme wafter, but possibly the best car that can do a reasonable fist of being a bloody good drivers car and a motorway wafter, and lots of other things too, is the Golf.
The Golf is a terrific car .... well rounded .... does most things really well.
Agree with previous comments about the Elise etc. I have an Elise S1 and I also have a Golf GT TDI 170 DSG.
The Golf is a fabulous machine. You just cant argue with 350nm of torque in a relatively light car ... and the DSG does a great job of keeping it in the peak torque band. My Golf is just as much fun as my Elise ... but in different ways.
I'd venture to suggest that the latest equivalent (the GTD) .... is a more complete car than the GTI .... certainly when you factor in fuel consumption of between 40 - 50 mpg.
Can't recommend one enough .... and I really can't think what I would replace it with.

I think the petrol one drive so much nicer than the diesels, it’s not all about torque. The petrol engine is lighter which makes a big difference in handling. And it revs out more yet is still torquey enough. I think some modern diesel have too much torque tbh, they eat gears - but I suppose as yours is an auto/DSG this isn’t too annoying.Agree with previous comments about the Elise etc. I have an Elise S1 and I also have a Golf GT TDI 170 DSG.

In regards to MPG you have to remember petrol is cheaper than diesel. Yes, the diesel is going to be easier run yet but not by a substantial amount. And it would only make a properly noticeable difference if you did about 20,000 miles a year. If you do heaps of miles it make sense to buy a diesel, but I know people with GT TDI's etc who only do about 8000 miles a year, madness

30k. 30mpg. Ok it's a fast little number. But it's still a golf. And you'll have to put up with "just like a golf" jokes for the next few years.
Think I'd sooner have a Jag XF on the drive for that money. That'd definitely give me a bigger smile to look out the window and see.
I would sooner have a Impreza STi Hatch for £32k. Think I'd sooner have a Jag XF on the drive for that money. That'd definitely give me a bigger smile to look out the window and see.
30k on a golf is just too much

List price for a new shape 125i M SPORT 5-dr is £26K, better mpg, lower tax, longer wheelbase, same performance, RWD, etc etc so the Golf is quite expensive in comparison.
I don't like BMWs, so I'd rather pay the extra and have the Golf. Mind you its all a bit hypothetical as I'm quite happy with my Edition 30 and don't see the need to fork out to replace itI really want to know what those Rims are called on the VW Golf GTI Edition 35..
I'm thinking of putting them on my mk4 golf...
Could someone give me the name of em
It would be helpful if someone gives me a price or a website link where I could buy em from..
Thanks
