Utterly pointless.
You could say that of any sports car, let alone a gearbox.Which is why Porsche should be applauded for catering for drivers who still appreciate the tactility and skill involved in driving a proper three-pedal H-gated manual.

I'd like to try a similarly spec'd Carrera manual and a Carrera PDK before making the call on which to go for - manual is my default choice
I think the manual is going to be quite rare so that test is going to be harder to arrange than I would like
I asked at an OPC yesterday if they had a manual 991. 'No and we don't expect we will unless its specifically ordered for a customer'

When I was idly looking at 996's a couple of years ago I noticed that the tiptronic models were cheaper than the manuals. Are the rare manual examples going to appreciate in the future I wonder?
Theres nothing 'rare' about a manual 996, there's thousands of them out there!I don't get the comment about "7 tightly-stacked ratios..etc". I understood that the box is essentially a manualised PDK and has 6 "normal" ratios plus a very long 7th.
So all the keeping the engine in the sweet spot stuff applies to the gears 1-6. 7th is like the old-fashioned overdrive with about 36 mph/1000rpm where 6th only pulls 26 mph/1000.
While there may be perceptible acceleration in 7th at 70 mph, it will be pretty weak that far down the torque curve. So a change-down will be needed when blocked slightly on the motorway, or to get away from anyone in a 2-litre turbodiesel. In my view they would have done much better to stick with a conventional 6-speeder with an automated or button-actuated overdrive.

Is it true that the PDK and the manual are basically the same gearbox?
I don't think so, in the article it states that Porsche should be applauded for developing a 7 speed manual for the 991, in an age where manuals are going out of fashion. I'm lucky to own a manual 997GTS, tried the PDK and was very impressed, especially in comparison to tiptronic, which I personally hated. It comes down to what you want from a car and how you will drive it, if it was my daily driver I think I would opt for PDK, but as a car I'm essentially driving for pleasure it has to be manual. Er, yes it is. It's an adaptation of the pdk twin gearbox. Includes the stop/start feature as well.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
