@ at the editor: the article needs to be corrected, the engine produced 167bhp, not 169bph as printed.
You're right that it produced 167bhp, but we've written 169hp. See here for the difference: http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/differ...Essentially, if you want to get from bhp to hp/ps, multiply the bhp by 1.01387. HTH, etc...
In that case, we tend to avoid the hp/bhp confusion by writing (DIN-)PS when we mean the 'other' kind of horse.
Actuall, if I'm not mistaken PSA were a bit dodgy with the conversion themselves as IIRC it was European Type Approval certified with 120 kW, which translates to 163 PS/hp rather than 167 or 169...

I've just sold mine. Huge amounts of fun. I echo the statements on build quality though. Had to eBay mine as a spares/repairs car in the end. 120k miles and lots of bits were falling off!
Given that I generally keep cars for about 6 months, the fact that this one lasted just under a year despite being quite broken for a lot of that time, is a testament to how good it was to drive.
I found the gearbox very good. Long 1st, but the rest of the gears were pretty close together. The synchros on 2nd and 3rd were knackered on mine though which spoilt it a bit.
The very surprising thing about these is the weight. ~1200kg! This explains the not-especially-quick 0-60 time of just under 8 seconds. I'm guessing the kit levels were partially responsible for this. Mine had climate control, sunroof, 4 airbags, auto wipers, electric windows/mirrors. IIRC they've got a pretty good NCAP rating as well, so perhaps they're pretty substantial underneath.

Sorry don't agree. In 1998 these weren't slow. 170bhp in a hatch was a lot (Golf GTi Turbo produced 150bhp). It had great handling, was light and agile. Ok build quality wasn't like the Golf but they didn't exactly fall to bit around you.
A great car and a great drive. Miss my old one
Didn't say they were slow in 1998. I said "its power output would soon be comfortably eclipsed by subsequent generations of 200hp-plus fast hatches".A great car and a great drive. Miss my old one
I wouldn't have made it SOTW if I didn't think it was a cracker!
Never been a big fan of these. but I wont bullst, having driven a few they were very quick and had real fun handling. I didnt like the crap trim and and the flimsy build. However if you can put up with that its a cracking car to drive (providing the electrics dont go haywire, the glovebox does not fall off, the drivers window does not fall in to the door and exhaust does not fall off: all that happended to my mates car way back in 2002 and his car was.. wait for it OWNED FROM NEW)
I had a 306 Rallye for a couple of years in cherry red.
They are a great car, and offer great value for money. I always found them a little dull compared to my 205's but for me it was a good all rounder that was quite good fun. I don't think i'd have another rallye again i'd go for the GTI6 for the extra comfort. Handling was excellent I have to say, and the engine makes a rather lovely induction noise after 4k rpm!
I thought it was quite thirsty for what it was though.

My flatmate had one of these back in the day and, while it may not have been the most durable of machines, it cornered amazingly well, sounded great, and had a lovely subtle ride. Sure, the interior's not so nice, and a few have been touched by the hand of chav, but its charisma easily shines through the negatives. I've never owned one, but always wanted to.
Nice Rallye ch3tman!

Interesting.... Actually I'd really like to use kilowatts as the measurement of choice, but that's just me...Actuall, if I'm not mistaken PSA were a bit dodgy with the conversion themselves as IIRC it was European Type Approval certified with 120 kW, which translates to 163 PS/hp rather than 167 or 169...

(but we definitely won't be using PS - pferdestarke is far too German-sounding for us )
Croft had these as track cars in the late 90's, I loved them.
I remember going around the track with my brother and dad in the back and the instructor in the front. We all thought we were flying around the track, then the instructor took us all out and we nearly wet ourselves
I'd buy this shed just for the memories!!
Oh and by the way, I never got out of 4th!

I've had my black Rallye for 2 years now. I absolutely love it! So, the interior rattles and the clutch cables are a bit sticky but there's an honesty to it which is quite rare. It's never failed on me, it drives well irrespective of weather, will fit a timber pallet in the back with the seats down, handles benignly and the noise is wonderful. It's also deceptively quick with a lovely, linear powerband. It's not going to threaten my Exige for handling precision, but in its own way it's just as fun to drive. I've promised myself a trackday in its before I sell.
