Sorry don't agree. In 1998 these weren't slow. 170bhp in a hatch was a lot (Golf GTi Turbo produced 150bhp). It had great handling, was light and agile. Ok build quality wasn't like the Golf but they didn't exactly fall to bit around you.
A great car and a great drive. Miss my old one
Didn't say they were slow in 1998. I said "its power output would soon be comfortably eclipsed by subsequent generations of 200hp-plus fast hatches".A great car and a great drive. Miss my old one
I wouldn't have made it SOTW if I didn't think it was a cracker!

Also sold on the fact that they handled very, very well.
Except at low speed. My mate would aim his at a parking space and end up three spaces away from where he should have been.I'd forgotten about that. For some reason, despite owning the car for a year I could never get to grips with the truly massive turning circle. Something to do with the gearbox poking well into the wheel arch I believe.

Great cars, kept mine for 9 months. Sold on for an e36.
Summary:
- good handling
- poor build quality/ seats
- a/c never works
- cambelt was advised to be done every 30k
- beams like most old Peugeot's die but a refurb exchange is only ~£400
- not very good on fuel
- turning circle, was worse depending if you turn left or right (can't remember which side)
The engine is brilliant, lots of low down torque and it was great when it came on 'cam' at about 3.5k. Surprised a lot of cars in it.
Drove it over to Ireland and toured round with not much problems (apart from the exhaust coming off as I exitied the ferry, it was low with baggage too though!).
It is missed, but going from that to a BMW is luxury.
Here it is on a Midlands PH run to Wales:
(had just bought it the green wheels were not my idea!!)

Despise these cars. Sold purely on the USP of a gimmick of a six speed box. Not particularly quick, awful inside and shockingly built in comparison to anything from Germany or Japan. Hell, even Rover / MG and most of the Italian manufacturers were putting their cars together in a more durable way.
Bullst - I've had two of these, both brilliantalfa pint said:

Think you will be on your own on this one.chongwong said:
loving it, seriously tempted tbh, as am in need of transport and my history of 1.2 corsa's needs to be spiced up How do these stack up in terms of running costs and reliability though?
I ran mine for a year, averaged 34mpg, tho if you were 'using' it properly, then down in the 20s..It needed 1 coilpack and an alternator in that time, but otherwise was perfect.
Only sold as I needed 5 doors.
They are real bargains at the moment. do it !
Great Memories....
Had a nile blue 306 GTI-6 as a company car in 98, where are you now R288EHD? I did 36k in a year - not bad for a 3 year 60k lease, I left the company after a year and handed it back! It was very reliable, quick and a nice place to be with the 1/2 leather, 1/2 alcantara seats. My next company car was a hateful burgundy E36 318i, even the Audi TT that followed failed to get close in fun levels.

Well they're a considerably better drive than your topless Tipo - better steering, better damping, obviously a much stiffer bodyshell, and quicker as well. They did in fact sell plenty because they offered sublime handling, looked great, and were actually quite quick (irrespective of what you seem to think).
Oddly enough, our VW of a similar age has just been put down due to terminal rust, something that has never troubled any of my Peugeots, so evidently German manufacturers don't always put their cars together better.
Italian manufacturers certainly didn't!
Always wanted one of these as i had the XSi warm version (136bhp) and wanted the extra power.
The chassis was the same though and the ride/handling balance was absolutely spot-on. I remember driving from Perth to Inverness avoiding the A9 after my finals in the streaming rain when I had it airborne several times (had to the road to myself pretty much). Probably up there in my top five drives of my life actually...
Now feeling quite tempted to scratch that itch as I need a cheap runabout...

Owned both a white Rallye and cherry red Rallye. They were the most unreliable, the most expensive to fuel, the most expensive on insurance and the most expensive to fix of any cars ive owned but I didn't give 2 hoots. Epic cars for the money. All it takes is a brisk drive down a B road in a good example of a 6/Rallye and you will get why the majority of owners will always have a soft spot for the rattly, unreliable, fuel munching tin boxes.
Fantastic memories of owning both cars and a good bunch of fellow owners over on the GTi6 forum.

I've had four now at all ranges, from £500 to £6000 and it's still on my go to list of go to cars for kicks. The last one I bought was an accidental, drunk ebay purchase of a Rallye for £800, which I took on a sodden Bedford trackday and had an absolute blast in.
Spec wise, it's ideal. A tuned NA 2.0 lump, no trick valve tech or wizardry but a metal inlet manifold for a glorious induction sound, a solid 6 speed gearbox and 15" wheels with 55 profile tyres giving superb handling (the GTI-6 and the teggy type R both use the same tyre, 195/55/15 and both are vying for the top handling front driver ever acholade. Coincidence?)
I also like the face that, if you take the badges off it looks like a diesel.
