No chance that you'll average 25mpg from a Monaro, in my experience. The owners I know rarely break into the 20s.

Anotehr good shout. I'll do some research on these.

Mercedes CLS would be in with a healthy shout but for the manual box.

If you use the car every day, it will become the norm rather than special.

Personally, I'd go with a 911.

I can't believe either of them fit the criteria of "25mpg minimum"?

I suppose a 911 might get close (it would probably need to be a 997 C2 to meet the mpg requirements, can you get one of them for 20k yet?)
A higher mileage 997 is a good option although there I've heard a lot of stories of engines going bang. The styling is lovely and they do tick all the boxes.

What problems does the 997's engine have? I know there were RMS/IMS problems with some of the earlier water-cooled 911s, but I thought they were all fixed by the time the 997 came out?

Same issues as the 996 engines have. The gen 2 997's didn't come out until 2009 and these are well over budget.

Ah OK. Didn't realise that.

Still, I'm not sure that there's anything else on the market that meets all of your criteria and from my experience, "common" engine failures are generally nowhere near as common as you'd think from reading the internet. People rarely complain vocally that their car is working perfectly.

Agree with this. cant think of anything else that meets the OP's brief as well.

Choose wisely (loads of buyers guides/advice around), have a look at a few and get a feel for the car, have a specialist inspection done and a get decent TP warranty.

It looks very clean to me, no flared arches, spoiler not over the top at all, simple lower plastics. The nostrils on the bonnet are a bit showy but nowhere near as bad as the vent on a WRX (or STI, whichever uses that style). I think it looks quite reserved for a big V8 coupe.

Too many options. OP have a look through here and see what grabs your attention. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/postc...

25MPG also hard to gauge. Many big engines will do that on a run, with a light foot. If you do city work, watch it drop though.

We clearly have a very different definition of what constitutes "clean".

Those side-skirts and wing look pretty "big" to my eyes, but each to there own.

Possibly too nice to use as a daily plus it will never to 25mpg but this is lovely.

Lovely thing, I do find my eyes drawn to the white 635CSi on the right hand side of the page though....

Alpina B5. Rare, understated, comfortable and quiet, faster in a straight line than anything else you are ever likely to meet, feels very special. Auto box (with buttons) and 23mpg though.....

Erm, you've chosen a modded one to prove your point. They are not all like that.

E46 M3, 335 or 135 would be my suggestions, not amazingly special but will perform well in eitehr scenario.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm tempted to save a little bit more and but some money into a petrol fund so that I can afford to run one of these!

It ticks all the boxes except the manual gearbox. In a few years affordable V8 coupes won't exist.
