If anything I'd consider the E46 cab more chavvy...
Yes!

I think they are somewhere in the middle of the two, not an out and out racer and can be chav in the wrong hands. Cool on a summers day in Estoril!

I'm not a fan of this type of rapidly dating convertible. They seem to be owned by the white XR3i convertible owners who got lost in the 80s and drive round with big silly sunglasses begging people to look at them and pretending that because it's a BMW convertible, people will think they've got an expensive car as they flaunt their fake watches an handbags - you can see that gormless sense of dozy smug all over their slicked hair or ruby-lipped faces.

So I voted chae even though in the hands of an enthusiast on a sunny day, driven with gusto, it could so easily transcend that. The fact it's an M3 helps but the fact every chav sticks on M3 badges doesn't.

I'm with this. The slightest modification can make them look chav.

I don't think it will be long before they are out of chav hands then they will be quite cool again.

I vote cool, but then I would. I don't think my Imola red convertible looks remotely chav smile

2thumbs - that is a really nice example you have there

I hadn't seen a decent E36 M3 Convertible on the road for quite some time until the other day in what looked like Santorini blue and it really did manage to turn my head. I'm seeing fewer E36s on the roads in good shape and when one shows up I realise my appreciation for them has grown over the past couple of years. So standard procedure ensues and I check out E36 M3s in the classifieds and realise how low E46 prices have come down and suddenly get distracted.

I don't see what the problem is with a convertible. Sure its abit heavier, but best of both world, surely? And if its cheaper/better value then that's a bonus.

There is something very smart looking about a mint coupe though. Even if its a 318is or a 328i sport. M-tech body kit with the right set of wheels. very tidy.

Chav tatt for me, not that this is nescercarily a bad thing as id happily smoke an xr3 cab.

Dont see the point of an m3 cab tho,of you want a sportscar buy the coupe and if you want a sunshine cruise buy a normal 3 series cab.

Car trader we deal with at work has just took in a low mileage 99 m3 cab in purple, its cringeful but each to their own.

Completely unmodified and owned by a respectful professional type a brilliant car, not exactly cool though but definitely not chav...

However, put a set of 18' or 19' alloys, Angel eyes, rear spoiler and red line it everywhere you go-then it is chav tat...

Unfortunately now much more examples of the latter than the former! The one youve found sounds a good un though

I think they're ageing better than I had anticipated. With E46 M3 vert prices becoming comparable much of the 'unwanted' attention will (and already has) focus on the newer, more powerful for similar money. I wasn't sure when the E36 would eventually become predominantly enthusiast territory but I think it's pretty much there. As long as good clean examples remain in the right hands I have no issue with any of the body shapes. I don't love the E30 convertible for example but I do appreciate the OEM looking ones on those 15" BBS that have been well respected during the course of their existence.

I'll admit I had an E36 M3 Convertible some years ago and I didn't keep it long as I didn't enjoy the image at the time. Don't get me wrong, given the right occasion, suitable roads and a sunny day I enjoyed the experience but 70% of the time I would have preferred the coupe version (rather a touring, massive trick missed) as I didn't feel the associated image suited me.

Still, I think I'm liking them more now they have a bit of age on their side.
