A mate has an orange 323 E21 I'll be looking at over the weekend.
At 750, it's sure to be rotten. Hope I'm wrong. If it's anyway good I'd strongly suggest you should buy it. Good luck.Ari said:

go on then, which parts off a VW van fit a 924?
here's a clue - not many
Same engine as the LT is it not? The door handles on the 944 I had for a while looked very similar to those on the old T3 bus we used to have when I was a kid. Alternator on the 944 was stamped with VW/Audi logos. Any more?here's a clue - not many

Wish I hadn't bid on the SD1 now. I'm checking it every twenty minutes now.
I owned a number of these in the 1970's and 1980's. Magnificent cars still the best family cruiser I have owned apart from a 4.7 Jeep and several 4.2. 4.5, and 4.9 litre Range Rovers. You could just throw kids into the car, in numbers, they disappeared.
The V8 gives a magnificent heart to the car.
Ziebart works IMO but by now there will be rust on the way. You cold easily break this if it fails in use and get your money back. Not that I would do that personally. But the engine and box are worth good money and the shell must weigh in at a ton plus.
MPG was around 20 from memory less with autos less with speed.
But a car I was and still am proud to have owned.
Never bettered in it class IMO.

That is gorgeous!
Up the budget a bit, buy a nice little Allegro so I can buy that?
Actually, I'm not too fond of the idea of making my mother cry again!

handles do look very similar, but they are completely different inside
CV joints are same as a type 4 van though, supposedly

Nice original car...

...apart from the after market wheels, leather seat covers, chrome bumper conversion, 74 grille and ST front valance.
Very nice though and should go way over budget.

Oil filter, spark plugs and a couple of other bits I think. here's a clue - not many
Sorry I was joking and forgot to put a smiley face at the end. Come to think of it the spark plugs are different as well.
The biggest problem with the 924 (apart from rust) is 944s are just as cheap and in my opinion a much better car.
The only real issue I can see with the 924 is its straightline performance. It's a good way down on the 944, yes, but that's not a rocket ship by modern standards either, and both would comprehensively outdrag a something like a standard MGB or X1/9. In some respects the 924 engine actually feels more willing and I'm told they respond well to a cam change which brings them close to 944 output with no other mods.
With two or three grand in my pocket I'd aim for a 944 (or maybe a 924S). But with a grand - like the OP (given a bit of saving or haggling ) - I'd go straight for a half decent 5-speed 924 rather than what's likely to be a ropey 944.
So I'm seconding the 924 suggestion.
But as a leftfield idea, there must be some obscure 1980s British Leyland machinery that's on the verge of classic status? Not really my thing, but I believe even Maestros are starting to gain a following.

As a rule I'm no Rover fan, and I hate chrome arch trims (usually because we all know what they are hiding). But that really is a looker!!
Cappuccino's out on the grounds of my being six two. Had a go in and and it was a hoot but the windscreen top got in the way.
Another Facebook suggestion...

...apparently there was a film called "the Blues Brothers" and they had something similar?
