My ridiculous old Pinto'd Sierra was categorically the loudest thing I've come across, no silencers fitted at all, straight Ashley pipework on carbs from (I believe) a ZX9-R. Had to park it a field over from the office as the locals complained that I woke them up when pulling into the car park. Loved it. Come to think of it My R32 Skyline was about as loud, in fact it was too loud, sold it because the steroe couldn't drown it out..

My top five 'noises' are:

Ferrari F355GTS (fitted with Capristo Level 2).
E30 325i Motorsport Convertible fitted with full Scorpion exhaust (Mine).
Porsche 964RS fitted with unknown aftermaket exhaust.
Ferrari F40 (on overrun)
Nissan Skyline (RB26) with Blitz NUR Spec R

All eclipsed by the old V10 powered F1 cars.

The noise is my only disappointment with the Elise. Unfortunately, for lightness it needs a little four pot, and to my ears four pots usually don't sound nice. It's odd, because the only one I do have much affection for is the Honda K20A, and the Toyota lump in my Lotus is really the same sort of thing, but it just doesn't sound as good to my ears.

It does sounds an awful lot better than it did before I stuck a 2bular exhaust on it, and I might see if a TRD airbox improves matters further, but to me this just doesn't sound good enough to give me the pleasure the rest of the car does:

I don't know whether it's just familiarity breeding contempt, but the sound of a four just seems harsh and lacking in richness to me, like comparing a kazoo to a saxophone.

Noise is really a huge part of the appeal of some cars. Test driving an Alfa GT with the 3.2 V6, revved it between 1 and 2k rpm at traffic lights, giggling like a child. It sounded so great. Shame the rest of the car didn't really live up to my expectations, I think it was just a bad example however.

Best noise IMO that I've personally encountered was the Ascari KZ1R GT race car, just divine cloud9

I hope we can have repeat of last year's chorus at the Nissan/Renault Sunday Service, perhaps with a little more organisation. It was glorious.

Anyone ever noticed how, of Ferrari's V8 range from the last 20 or more years, the sound of the 355 is almost unique?

It seems to be capable of producing a chime-like sound at high rpm that elevates it well beyond the (in my opinion) slightly flat blare of the 308/328, 348 and later cars. The only similar sounding car I've heard over the years seems to be Weslake-engineed GT40s when really wound up.

For me its got to be V8-V10-V12.. For big sound you gotta go for a big engine !!

599GTO sounds amazing, be it on full blast, overrun or just idle.

This Murcielago R-SV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go6kxyKSDZ0&fea...

Ferrari CS has to be one of the loudest i have heard.

Pretty much any big American V8.. 1960s Camaro SS, Pontiac GTO, Plymouth 'Cuda etc etc..

Fatboy's Viper is bloody loud too !!!

and obviously the VXR8 with a Wortec wink not being bias or anything lol

Agreed! My mate had one (before he stacked it) and I remember we were going through a tunnel on the M25 and it made a glorious noise. We were in the services and he blipped the throttle and a kid in a van parked next to us nearly fell out of the door he jumped so hard!

Sounds Matters - but more to it than just volume

Larger capacity sounds so much better than a 1.2 Corsa with a massive exhaust

I've mentioned it before on here but my old Chimaera 500 with straight-throughs was a lovely sounding thing. By lovely I mean almost ridiculously loud, but that's how I like it! Even with stock exhaust it was loud. I remem going to view the thing with a view to buying it (I did, obv) and the guy started it up and gave it a little blip as he did so. His little girl was playing nearby and she jumped about 6ft in the air. Clever sales ploy by the bloke I think. When I sold it, and the bloke was driving it away it dawned on me that it was the first time I had ever heard it from outside, being driven. It sounded amazing. I nearly chased him down the street to call it off.
