The excess on the micra is more then the car is worth but it is cheaper to insure it fully comp with a excess of 500 then it is to insure it 3rd party only silly

I see where you are coming from but what if its a proper accident, concussion, injuries etc? The 100 'saving' is suddenly a very bad idea.
You don't pay your excess on a claim against you. You pay it if you make a claim on your own behalf.

It depends on your policy agreement.

That. Some policies/types of claim require you to pay the excess on third-party claims too.

It seems much less common that it used to be (my first 2/3 policies all specified it but none since then have) but I came across a couple of cases working in a bodyshop where there were issues with the third-party paying the excess and thus causing cars not to be released for repair.

Surely the value of the car is also a factor? Insurance companies write cars off these days as though its going of fashion, a scuffed alloy is enough for a Cat D write off it seems. If the excess is higher than the car is worth then you'll never have to use it in a non-fault claim anyway, they'll just write the thing off.

Yes, on a lot of policies you pay out your excess then when its been decided which way the claim goes (could end up 50:50 in which case zip back). If its 100% no fault you could wait months.

My insurer wanted me to cough up my excess to 'handle my case' when I was rear ended and the other insurer admitted full responsibility within a day of the accident. My insurer wouldn't talk to me further without me coughing up the excess first.

If you can afford to pay £25,000 for a Focus RS and pay the subsequent fuel bills etc then I wouldn't have thought saving just over £100 over the course of a year would be a high priority.

Admiral insisted on a compulsory excess of £5000 when I took a policy out with them on an M3 when I was 20. Would I have done it out of choice to save £115. Ha ha, no way. You'd be mad to even contemplate it.
