Those wheels look retarded! Who the hell wants 20" rims on a Boxster?

Where did you get the idea that the current 5 is a dreary peddle?
Drove a press car about 18 months ago. Found the engine dull and characterless, the controls overassisted and pretty lifeless. Generally felt very normal and sanitised.

Far prefer an early MX-5.

Interesting comments...

RE the coast function - if it works anything like in my KN hybrid, you'll never even notice it occurring !
drive is disconnected, and the engine is cut.
as soon as power is demanded again, then the engine starts - but not with the starter I believe
it helps fuel consumption massively.
Std motorway on the KN is 30-34 mpg
elec Handbrake is easy .
stop with footbrake.
press switch.
release footbrake
drive off when ready

I think the looks are an improvement; 20" wheels ? not for me.
The steering on the KN is electric - I don't find it at all bad; in this type of car, I really don't want the same feedback as my GT3 on back roads !
but it still has feel where it counts - you can feel grip shifting around and weight transfer.

Now, I have to delcare an interest in Porsche - having had a 986 S, a few 996 & 997s KN's and currently a GT3 clubsport and a 997 Cup Car.
If I could afford the $ for a soft top - my money would be going on the box - basic spec as possible

Well, except the wheel arches have been cut large enough to accommodate pointlessly huge wheels.
Sorry - you're complaining about the overall diameter of the alloy+tyre?

Pretty much everyone else is complaining about the diameter of the alloy part of the wheel which just seems too big at 20". I think it'd look better with a higher profile tyre and lesser diameter alloy, I don't think that the overall diameter of the entire wheel is too big at all.

Had to read to the end of your post before I realised what a KN Hybrid was hehe but pleased to hear your comments...

Agreed! And I also agree with your comparison more likely to be the Exige rather than the Evora.

At least the 986 delivered on the latter, which is why it's still the best looking production Boxster by far.

Can I ask is it really 2-3 times better than an MX-5 as it's priced? For day to day motoring not tracks.
I'm seriously looking at one of these (you struggle to spec one less than 50k) whereas you can get a top of the range MX-5 for around 18K if you shop about.
It's a genuine question - I've never driven a boxster so don't have that knowledge myself.
Get yourself down to an OPC and take a Boxster out for a drive. Not only is it a well balanced and fun car to drive, it's increidbly practical two seater convertible with storage in the boot and under the bonnet. My OPC is quoting September delivery but I expect the waiting list to grow after people see the car for the first time next month.

I've already done numerous specs. My latest is:

GT Silver Metallic 1,594.00
Roll-over bar with Aluminium Look paint finish 344.00
Mesh wind deflector 182.00
ParkAssist front and rear 599.00
Electrically retractable exterior mirrors 202.00
Automatically dimming interior and
exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor 332.00
Sports tailpipe Exclusive 364.00
Seat heating 283.00
Cruise control 267.00
HomeLink (programmable garage door opener) 194.00
ISOFIX for passenger side 121.00
Sports seats Plus (2-way, electric) 1,291.00
Guards Red seat belts Exclusive 166.00
Porsche crest embossed on head restraints Exclusive 138.00
Sound Package Plus 397.00
Telephone module for PCM 526.00
Voice control for PCM 308.00
PCM including navigation module with universal audio interface 2,141.00
3rd Year Porsche Assistance 169.00
Third Year Warranty 660.00

Total = 54,088

For starters, I think you can remove the 3rd year assistance and warranty but not sure (-769). If I choose Platinum Silver instead of GT Silver (-1,036), I'll also cut the aluminium roll over bar (-344), and the sports tailpipe from the spec (-364). That's a total saving of 2,513 giving a purchase price of 51,575. The removal of Porsche seat crests (166), voice control (308), red seat belts (166) and dimming mirrors will not detract from your enjoyment (50,935). I've selected manual and I think PCM comes with Sports Chrono but waiting for the OPC to confirm that.

What's your ideal spec?

Sports Chrono is a separate option from PCM at 1084 for manual transmission; includes dynamic transmission mounts.

@Mike, like you I seem to come up with a different spec every time I use the configurator :-)
I think some of the options are just too expensive and a way of increasing the list price tbh. Heated seats for one example.
The question of value was raised earlier too and for that reason (& probably being a bit tight) I just couldn't bring myself to spend this amount of a car so I'll just have to look on enviously every time I see one.
To those on here who've ordered one. Fantastic choice. I settled for an MX5 in the end.

Thanks SFO. The strange thing is that every time I spec the PCM it makes me take the Sports Chrono off so a little confusing.

So far as value is concerned, a car only costs you what you lose on it when you sell it and I think the Boxster will hold up rather well. Since I passed my driving test, I've only ever owned cars for 18 months at the most but the Porsches I've owned are the notable exceptions because I never get bored of them. You really need to drive a Boxster before you decide and I assure you that you won't regret it.
