Another one to the list, engine BXEB54317. Our 09 plate VW Golf Estate had the same problem last Monday evening, again no warning at all, just died, without the lovely lights on the dashboard showing any error. Its been to the VW garage today, conrod on cylinder 1 has gone through the block, lad in the garage asked if it made a noise beforehand, but as everyone on here says, no warning whatsoever. A new engine can be fitted for £7604, and VW won't make any good will contribution. I've been on to VW myself and i'm awaiting a call back. We bought the car from a VW dealer wtih VW finance as an ex demonstrator, it had its first 3 services with VW and then to our local garage. The reason for not helping is the mileage (just about 16k per year) and that it hasn't been fully serviced by VW. What a rip off, you have to pay the inflated price for their servicing just to keep up the warranty, what you don't expect is a diesel engine to pack up after 100k miles. Clearly not good customers, i'm onto my second Polo, son had a Lupo and this Golf, they certainly won't be getting any more of my hard earned money.
Good job it happened on a quiet road at nighttime. If it had been on a motorway or pulling off a roundabout it could have been serious.
And here's another sad story about 09 1.9 BXE engine in vw passat - same thing happened us yesterday. Shortly after service and mot, driving 30mph, a big ripping sound from underneath. AA guy confirmed engine blown...con rod most likely. Now having to face scrapping a 7 year old car and get new replacement. Almost identical situation to Maddypoppins. Very happy VW owner for years up to now but seriously considering going elsewhere. Not happy with VW. 7 years???

From experience if at speed bang it into neutral to prevent you coming to an immediate stop possibly with the front wheels locked!

When mine went I'd just joined a dual carriage way (no hard shoulder) and pulled out to overtake an artic just coming past it. He nearly flattened me once I had coasted past and then friction began slowing me down and he came past. Fortunately the next slip road was only a few 100 yards away...

This sounds like a very personal experience. My neighbour just stepped over 500k miles with his octavia tdi pd and he only had a clutch so far at 300k. Has the car for years now and never had any issues. Why do I feel like your engine was serviced by someone who didnt give a f and why do I also have a feeling the parts used are not OEM?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot that he also had the turbo changed, at 300-310k

My 1.9 AVF died after human intervention. I had the cambelt changed for piece of mind, which then prompted the tensioner stud to work loose and lunch the engine. 245k miles, she did well.

So what's the record for a 1.9 with a BXE code? One in the family with 170K.

It was never claimed to be all vag bxe engines, just a particular batch. Said batch put piston through block. I'd guess that hopefully all the ones that were going to go have by now.

The one that replaced the one that went bang (has to be same engine code apparently) was still going very strong at 145k (chassis on 206k) and felt like it would easily double that mileage. Same can't be said for the rest of the car as the electrical gremlins were multiplying...

My AWX engine in my 02 plate Audi has just passed 270k. I last did the cambelt at 200k and I don't know if I should bother doing it again or just leave it and risk it :/ As I must be due a new car soon anyway and I doubt it's worth much now.

I’ve had the same problem with this engine, my Golf 1.9 TDI died on me the other week, it’s a 2008 Golf with 88,000 miles on the clock.

We were driving along at approx 30mph and there was a bang from the engine, no warning signs it was going to happen, just a bang! We were towed to a local garage and was told the engine has blown! What a shock!

Did some research and found out about these engines, especially the BXE one, I checked my log books and there it was BXE on there. I did not expect something like this to happen to these types of cars, as they have such a good reputation,

I have reported it on here for what it’s worth.

Hi everyone, I got here not because I do have problem with my cars engine , but to find out most common VAG engine failures, especially with BLS code. Have started to worry about, because it has nearly 350000 miles ( or 560000kms) on Speedo, original turbo (just replaced 2k miles ago turbo boost actuator and it got power back). No smoke or other major issues, apart light oil leak from top.

On 7th May 2020 I took my 2009 Audi A6 1.9tdi Avant for a run on dual carriageway to give the battery a charge. Owned the car from new, never missed a service. Only done about 63'000 miles. After two mile at 70mph noticed change to engine tone - when changing from 5th to 6th gear revs stuck, lifted foot off accelerator, revs dropped - tried to change gear again and revs shot back up again, within seconds blue grey smoke from rear, swiched off engine - left it in 5th gear and coasted to a halt. No electrics at all totally dead. Thought turbo had gone. Recovery to garage - found the conrod was through the block.
Having to have a new remanufactured engine. I have been searching online and there seems to be a common fault of this happening although I can't find out if there has/is a recall by VW/Audi. Bought this car due to (what I thought to be ) quality of build and reliability.
Has anyone managed to find any information on this?

Hi everyone i have a question about my car which is a SEAT IBIZA 1.9TDI PD100 2004, was going down the motorway when the car suddenly spluttered/hesitated a little for a few seconds then all was normal again, then about 10 minutes later it did the same thing again so carried on for a good 20 miles where i slowed down at road works and once passed i accelerated but the car just instantly lost all power and forced me to pull over onto the hard shoulder, but before i had stopped i tried twice to restart the car by using the gears but nothing, checked the timing and alternator belts all look good so thinking it is electrical rather than mechanical as there was no noises at all, now the battery is nearly dead from sitting on the motorway for six hours, dash shows battery sign lighted and that's it. oh the mileage is 239,600 so done a fair bit.
Anyone else had the same problem?

Have had an 1.9 diesel Passat and the only problem was injector ending it's life near 300k km, did most of the work myself as there is plenty info on the web regarding the 1.9's https://www.carmanualsonline.info/volkswagen-golf-...
