But in answer to your original question they are better.
Bit of a stupid answer when in reality they are out of reach for American Police forces. Anything can be better, whether you can buy, repair and run them for the same cost is another matter. I read somewhere a while back the Crown Vic cost less than $12k in Police guise. I'm willing to bet an unstressed lazy V8 will last longer in Police use than one of our engines.
The question was NOT is there a better car for the same money or budget!

Pretty appalling figures, yeah. Surely there's some better cars available for the job? OR at least, better cars could be made for it... I know they like their body-on-chassis construction for cop cars so they can use the PIT manoeuvre without twisting everything up, but considering that life isn't actually like Grand Theft Auto most of the time, I'd have thought the 'average' Police Cruiser could be something a bit more modern, maybe have a few V8 Interceptors of the Crown Vic. sort lying around if they need to stop someone more violently...
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGMoP9srA2c&fea...
There is a sort of simplicity and honesty about the Crown Victoria, its like the dictionary definition of Saloon car, would love to see an American Police mechanic with a Tri Turbo BMW engine in bits, the BMW is to specialist and doesnt offer them anything additional and loses a lot of what they need, too small inside, too fragile, too complex and it isnt American, they do still do the patriotism thing over these quite well.
I would quite like a Crown Vic as a daily, its a pity our government and oil companies like to meter fuel out in smaller and smaller thimbles for more and more money, the eco side is a sham, it is just control and a captive market, one side to pay for massive profits and the other to shore up a welfare state whose scope has crept and turned into a monster.

Because hurr durr mericans are stoopid. They should all drive BMWs and Audis for the imagine.
That's what you want to hear, right?
Wow that's a huge leap; from genuine question based on curiousity to a full blown accusation of xenophobia. Nice...That's what you want to hear, right?
I'd have asked the same question if the title was "English Police Cars", "Pink Police Cars" or "Martian Law Enforcement Saucers".

How do they manage to obtain a combination of huge engine, appalling MPG and poor performance?
Duno, but the way I see it is that you can have 2 things..1- a cheap/unstressed engine that can run for lots of miles and is very reliable.few parts to go wrong.
2-a more expensive. higher stressed engine which although achieves higher mpg, requires more maintenance, has more things to go wrong.
This is currently the case with the new ecoBoost engines for the F150.

I'm not sure I'd want my stolen car back after it had been through that!It is a shame that such a big part of police programs will have to end it will be way to expensive for them repair the cars after ramming them into cars, trucks and each other that the yanks seem to enjoy.
I can't see their really being that much of a need for an american police car to handle all that well, since they do not often have the roads that need a car to handle that well, and who wants to see a police chase were the cars grip as they fly around a City? tail out and smoking tires all the way lol all brought to you by the country that is even more anal on H&S than this one

Oh the need is there, it's just that the easier (cheaper) option is to just not drive as fast. You may need clean pants after just watching this!.

The big boat cruisers are comfortable and even fun to drive as long as you are aware of their limitations and don't ask them to do something they can't. I drove a Crown Vic (well it was a Grand Marquis, but same thing) for a while and you would have to be driving very silly for it to get properly loose. Certainly in a manner you shouldn't be driving on public roads regardless of the capabilities of any car.
