Average. Like anyone, I make the occasional daft manoeuvre or mistake, but on the whole, not bad, seem to be able to anticipate other peoples intentions.

Zed 44 said: Used to think I was s+x*t hot but age, experience and wisdom has sharpened my perspective. Me too. Most of my mates used to recon I was pretty quick but the actual truth is I used to drive like a angry testosterone-fulled little Cockend in my yoof and frankly I'm as surprised as they are that I'm still alive. Nowadays I'd say about average. I try to have a safe, comfortable and considerate drive but admit I make mistakes and misjudgments. Perhaps my biggest problem is a lack of need to get anywhere in a hurry now so I'm loosing the ability or willingness to stay sharp and push the limits like I used to.

I like to think my car control and reading of the road are better than many, but in terms of observation there are still some hazards/variables I don't identify as soon as I should - so plenty of room for improvement, teaching myself to allow more for worst-case scenario with blind corners, sunstrike etc.
As others have said I think most PHers probably are above average for wider population simply because of taking an interest in driving and being willing to learn.

I clicked "could do better"
I'd like to think I'm a pretty decent driver all round, but no-one's perfect, everyone could do better.

I BGOL as a matter of routine. Seriously, I make mistakes but recognise them and try to learn from them. I do like to consider myself above average but that's not really saying much is it.

I reckon 'smarter than the average bear'.
Not because of any great skill or car control, but more down to observation and awareness. Manily, I think, due to years of riding bikes.
Nothing makes you more aware of what's going on than ever present possibility of "sorry mate, didn't see you!".

I'm a perfect driver.
Never speed. Always leave plenty of room between myself and the car in front. Accident free for the last 20 years. Seen thousands of accidents, but never involved... I am as calm as a clam behind the wheel. What's road rage?
My skills are the pinicle of driving perfection.
Edit to add - Why is my OH laughing? What's so freekin funny?
Have I missed something?

On the road I'd like to think I'm better than average. Not by much mind, but I'd like to think I was in the top 40%.
On a track I'm not so hot. I think my lines and mechanical sympathy are reasonable (or so the guys at JP put it) but I don't have the confidence to get the power down and carry as much speed as I could. That may come with more track days over the years, but I'm actually quite comfortable with my current skill level.

Depends on what you mean. My road craft is quite good (although it could still improve a lot), but I'll never make a particularly good track driver.

I've voted for "Smarter than the average bear", but that's based on me taking a bunch of "drive and survive", "commentary driving" and skidpan lessons from a local driving school that specialises in advanced driving techniques. Based on the feedback from my instructors I can confidently say I was a good driver before the lessons, but the extra tuition certainly helped a great deal, and I still apply most, if not all of what I learnt on a daily basis.

A lot of people on here will have done the odd track day and maybe had some performance driving tuition, simply because it's a site for car enthusiasts and that's the sort of thing we like to do.
Providing they have the common sense to only exercise their abilities where it's safe to do so I think that will make them more capable than the average A-to-B motorist.

That's a very big "providing", though. I'd be quite surprised if the accident rate of Pistonheads members wasn't higher than the national average.

It's been shown that most men believe they are better than average drivers. I think the response to this poll shows that nicely. PH posters are obviously just as deluded

I think the key issue though is that ability is not just technical. Track days will improve your ability to control a car, no doubt, but they may well not do anything to improve your atttitude, which is IMHO a significant part of being a good driver. I'd wager that PH posters are far more likely than the average driver to get involved in a race with another road user.

I'dike to think I'm slightly better than average for the following reasons...
- I've passed the first stage of advanced driver training at work to be allowed to use Millbrook/Mira (some people do fail!)
- I've spent far too much time sat in the co driver seat watching nutters at work behind the wheel and have learnt a thing or three from them.
- I spent many an hour hooning my old 106 around old airfields learning how to drive it on the limit, LFB, heel/toe and control oversteer etc.
However... I will freely admit I do still have an awful lot to learn and there is always a lot of room for further development!
