The one thing I get paranoid about more than anything is the roof mechanism busting mid-flow and it being stuck half open with everyone staring.

Has anyone had this with any of their cars, and more importantly was it an easy fix?
My roof has been a bit of a bugbear, it's renowned on the E36 as there are lots of sensors to go wrong.

Mine had an utterly infuriating habit that, either fully up or fully down, it would just not go back. At all. Nothing else, just a dead switch. Couldn't even diagnose the faults on the module.

I eventually did some investigation and found that the boot microswitch in the catch was loose. Shimmed it with a bit of cardboard, and it's perfect now, touch wood.

So yes, that was an easy fix but there's plenty more to go wrong!!

Golf mk1, manual roof. Quicker to open/close than the electric one, never had any issues in 18 years of ownership. I'm aware there's a lot of cars with no manual roof option, but given the choice I'd opt for a manual roof every time. You can even bring down the price a bit since the electric roof is a desirable option to most people.

Yes I'd much prefer a manual roof. Mines one of the new z4s with a hardtop convertible, and therefore there isn't even a manual override option. If my car had a fabric hood with manual option it would be brilliant.

I had a CRX many moons ago with electric hardtop but manual override, so much safer in these situations!

Yep, my old MX5 was perfect... "Latch, latch, drop". Simple!

Opening my MG TF gets stiff occasionally when the fabric hasn't folded quite right but because it's a simple, manual roof you can feel it's not going to go so just need to jiggle the fabric and it's perfect. Closing it's always perfect and I can raise it from the drivers seat in a couple of seconds, an electric roof would take five times that at least.

This is mine - never owned a convertible before and I like how it is two cars rolled into one. Amazing the difference between the roof being up and down as you are driving along

Cheers

I wouldn't swap body parts for an Audi as depreciation can be a wonderful thing:

Bit of a girl's car though.

That's been on sale a while and it may have dropped in price.

Not the best car I owned but was the only cabrio, did enjoy it though, roof down unless raining.
But you could just read people's faces saying "tt" when you drive past with the roof down in a foot of snow at -5 in winter lol

Finally got the chance for a bit of a spruce-up today.

Looking pukka this afternoon:

Got two at the moment:

Current daily driver. Fun, precise, 'Elise-Lite' handling.

Fun, imprecise, 'Exit' euthanasia-society handling, quite stupidly loud and conspicuous. If you're considering one I highly recommend picking one up.

EDIT: Next-door neighbour pitched-up in a Jensen Interceptor convertible in blue earlier. It looked (and sounded) great.
