RE: Chris Harris video: Mercedes SLs
Discussion
Chris, I am afraid to say you are going about these videos all wrong.
There is just too much bloomin' driving involved.
This is a much better example of how you should be reviewing the cars.
Get those teeth sorted chap, and put on your best suit!

How big does the seat on the new car look!
Harris looks like he is sat in a DFS showroom.
Wasn't just me that thought that then! He looked like he needed a smoking jacket and a pipe to compliment the armchair!! Harris looks like he is sat in a DFS showroom.
My mum has a 500SL from the early 80's - 'L.A. Spec' as mentioned by CH.
It's a wonderful car. Made in an era where Mercedes would make a car to the best of their abilities then work out what the price should be as opposed to making cars to fit a market segment (perhaps because they were actually defining them!). A well worn cliche, but it feels like it was hewn from granite.
To drive, its about as sharp as a hammer but it has an undeniable grace and elegance to the way it conducts itself. Even if you mash the throttle to the floor, there's a moment while the old girl lifts her skirts and then goes for the horizon with a whoosh of intake noise.

Enjoyed the video too.
I've harboured a guilty fondness for the previous SL, especially in AMG 55 and 63 forms. Both of which were great looking cars and the folding metal roof is just inspired for a car of this type. Mercedes did it first and are still doing it best.
However the new car is a massive step backwards in styling terms for me. It's like a half-baked SLS (itself ungainly and awkward). If only they had taken inspiration from their past - that's some back catalogue. A modern version of the orginal would have been breathtaking.
What's going on with Mercedes styling? They're all getting uglier (they're in good company, I include Ferrari in this list of shame).
Your video makes it clear that this might be the first ugly SL. Who the heck signed it off? It's worse than bland. It's positively uneasy on the eye. What a shame.

That's absolutely classic Merc though and even on my lowly 200TE it used to give exactly the same sensation, and the same in my dads C240. Would love to know what it's like in a properly quick one like a 500 Edited by Asterix on Thursday 29th March 11:48

A bit contradicting r.e. steering feel.
Chris said the W198 had a lack of feel, so anyone saying modern cars are losing that is talking cods wollop. Then says that the newest one feels slightly detached with EPAS?!
No biggy, just pointing it out. A great video as always, love watching them.
The point he was making is that anyone who thinks a lack of steering feel is something only to be associated with modern cars is mistaken, there are cars of every generation with great and poor steering feel.Chris said the W198 had a lack of feel, so anyone saying modern cars are losing that is talking cods wollop. Good video!
I don't see any connection between the original 300 and the SL's that followed. In fact, the 300's successor didn't appear until just a couple of years ago with the AMG SLS, and the roadster's successor is the SLS roadster. It's not just the doors, but the intent. For example, the original 300 was based on a race car. The SLS races.
The 230 SL is a development over the 190. That's the SL's actual starting point which has lead to the current car.
