Bring the VW motor up to date, stick a 20VT or TFSI motor in it.

I think the biggest problem with these is the fact it has got a Porsche badge on it. If it was a 70/80s VW Coupe it would be mega cool, could you get a Scirroco this age, this condition for under a grand? Because it's got the Porsche name on it, it gets slated - mad.

I like it.

I am currently using an '86 924S (2.5 engine) as my daily and its great. Handles well (even with tired suspension), easy enough to hang the tail out. Cheap classic insurance too! MPG isn't too bad either.

had an advert for one of those new on my wall at uni from Malaya Garage in Billngshurst the new 924 Lux £9,104 new was same price as top of the range granada. Always thought they were quite pretty cars, esp the later ones with the rear spoiler...then the 924S, that was probably the best of the lot 1986 just elegant with a good engine...and great handling...sadly i never owned one and went straight into the 911 964 club...still quite fancy one, they seem too look pretier with age...or perhaps thats the eyesight getting worse as i get older!! lol

Cool SotW. If only there were these sorts of offers here in Germany.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet but if all the advertiser's shots show the headlights popped up, they'll inevitably need fixing.

Other than that it looks pretty straight. The interiors in these are usually falling apart, so this one doesn't look bad for the money.

diverifying a little from the topic but I think worthy of a mention is the 924 GTS, these were a more agressive looking car, anr if not wrong a turbocharged verion, a lot more expensive now but stillo a 924 of interest, rallied by Walter Röhrl in Germany as recently as 2008.......just thought I'd mention it.....

Easier and cheaper to just buy a 924 turbo if you want more power

Like the Sp-2 ?

Only 75 BHP but still sell for several times what a 924 does.

If changing engines I reckon an Audi 5 pot turbo would slip in there and maybe even mate up to the torque tube too.

Can you buy it and drive it over? Are there nasty charges for permanently importing a classic car?

Nice. Reckon the 924 is becoming one of my favourite Porsches tbh. Each and every day I think "umm they look fantastic". Very nice cool cool usable classic. Any self respecting 19 year old should be behind the wheel of one of these. (or 29, 39, 49, 59 year olds biggrin ).

Funny how the first thing everyone normally says about the 924 is the fact it has a "van" engine. It wouldn't bother me,If this is the case then you could also state that Jaguar E types have tank engines (a derivative of te unit used in the scorpion light tank.)

Does the 924 have the rear mounted transaxle gearbox as per the 944?

One of my favourite threads on PH:

'Think of it as a VW'?

Weren't they built at the Audi plant at Neckarsulm? Think RWD Audi?

And does the 'E' Type have a turret mounted gun on it's roof? Just jesting, I get your point. If the engine in the 924 is up to not only pulling a van but also the abuse 'white van man' gives them then it should be well upo to the job in the lighter 924 shell, back to the original post, a terrific bargain to grin factor!!.
