Am I right in saying that the 80's F-Type ended up becoming the DB7 in the end? At least in parts?
No. F-type never made it off the drawing board. When it was shelved, there were debates over whether it would be front, or mid-engined. DB7 was based on an XJ-S floorpan and running gear and I6 engine.
F-Type was canned in 2002.

Am I the only one upset by it being turned into a soft top?
Personally speaking I found the concept to be an absolute stunner
I dare say they'll produce a coupe at some point. I think starting out with the drop-top is better from a marketing perspective because it gives a stronger impression that the car was designed with the lack of structural rigidity in mind from day one (whether it really was or not). If a company produces a tin top then takes the roof off, it will always be viewed as "dynamically compromised" in a way that doesn't seem to happen the other way around. Personally speaking I found the concept to be an absolute stunner
It certainly worked for Porsche with the Boxster/Cayman.

Suddenly, the Aston V8 will seem very expensive.
I disagree. If it's anything like the XK vs DB9 (which I highly suspect it will be), I can see where the extra money has gone in the Aston when comparing the two side by side. Just the finish of everything is higher, the paint is sublime and the interior is just a fantastic place to be. The Jag, as good as it may be to drive, just isn't as good as an overall package imo.fatboy b said:
Hmmm. I'd question your facts there. DB7 was launched in 1994. So it must have been penciled around '91.

XJ41 was the F-type of the 1980's. The F-type concept pictured a few posts above was X600 (cancelled in 2002). They were completely different programs.F-Type was canned in 2002.

Please, please let it have a normally aspirated V8
You'll be lucky to get a V6 in this era. If they intend to follow the future Boxter, then a turbo four pot may sell ok. Assuming Jaguar know how to make a car weigh less than Buckingham Palace. I am not convined on that one.Stew2000 said:

I disagree, I've just gone from an Aston to a Jaguar XKR. Yes the Aston is finished much better than the Jag inside with high quality leather, but thats where it stops there. I feel the Jag is a much better built, more solid and put together then the hand built Aston.Technology wise, the Jag is miles ahead of the Aston. All the systems are integrated correctly all around the car, as per any modern car (even though Jag system getting a little dated). With the Aston, you could tell things where built on a budget, and that they had dipped into various parts bins to build the car. Terrible Volvo sat nav, switches and stems from a Ford etc. It was all too much of a mismatch, where as the Jag is, and feels a properly built car. I never got this feeling with the Aston.I'm glad I ticked the box owning an Aston. I, like many, fell into the trap of wanting the most beautiful looking car in the World. Going from a 'modern car' into the Aston, felt like a huge backwards step. If the Aston was my second Sunday car, I'd have kept it. The Jag is an everyday car, that is what I need.
