The massively single turboed 2JZ got my attention.

I can't think of a way to ruin an SL more comprehensively than replace the refined engine with a laggy, noisy one, ruin the comfortable suspension with coilovers and ruin the seats by swapping them for Ferrari items...

I tend to agree. R129's are now just bordering on cool. Fitting a JDM lump would not be my choice. Or those alloys either. Maybe a big 6 litre V12 Bi Turbo from a later CL65AMG. Some nice retrim, bigger brakes. But keep the car a comfy long distance bahnstomer.

I daresay Brabus did some funky things with those at the time, so emulating that would be more in keeping with the character for the car.
