Hi All

I really fancy taking part in track days, I've done a couple in the past but more often than not I get put off by the fact that I cant be without transport if I accidently bin my daily driver. So now that I've finished Uni I fancy getting rid of the DERV and in to a couple of cars a little less sensible. I've always wanted a Porsche 944 so I think I'm going to have one. I will have around 3k in total for both cars.

The track car/daily I cant make my mind up on at first I thought mk4 escort rs turbo but that's more of an itch needing scratched. Then Volvo v70 t5 this seems to make a lot of sense, but I keep getting drawn towards mx5s, E30 325S and maybe even a z3. Are any of these cars reasonable in the snow? Any views or opinions on track day suitability are most welcome.

Thanks in advance

£3K isn't much to get 2 cars with 1 to be abused on a track and other to rely

on as a dailysmile

Yeah it's a big ask, but my thinking is that if one cars got problems I can use the other to get to work. The plan is to keep the 944 as a fir weather/back up car and use the other car as a daily/track car.

If you have £3k for two cars neither should be a 944.

944 S2 are great, cheap old 2.5's are pretty crap

Cheap track car - see what comes up but E30 / E36 BMW and MX5 would be on my list.

And for a track car easy to strip out and slightly modify for it to outgun most things unless it's a pure power circuit

Are the 2.5s that bad? I was hoping to pick up an early 16v maybe even one that needed a bit of work for about 1500 to 2k

Will mainly be Knockhill, clio probably suits that track very well.

Quick update, just bought a Clio 172 and its a hoot. Really glad I did a what car thread. Still got to buy the porsche but since I've done a few extra shifts at work I'm thinking about a 944 turbo or an old boxster now.

You should have been up at the 'hill last night then! Had great fun buzzing around the track all evening!

That seems counter intuitive to me.

2.5s crap? Thats just stupid, they are great fun and robust cars. Can be made to go really fast at tracks if you do it right. 2.5 16v can be hard to find spare engine for example since the production numbers are pretty low..

Good stuff. Which 172 have you plumped for? There are 3 versions...
