Shame you dismissed the Mondeo and can't go to 2.0. The 2.0TDci is probably the best secondhand car on the road.

Volvo V40/70 diesels....
V40 might be a lil cramped mind (focus size). Hell, even the S60 or S70 would be big enough for most...
Cheap to insure too....

Id suggest a Skoda octavia estate 110 tdi, they go for miles, we had a taxi in my old work with 480,000 so they should be reliable & they are big too.

Citroen C5 Estate? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3765749.htmI seem to remember Jerry Moffatt had one on an old climbing film ('No comment', I think), and got 4 or 5 bouldering mats in the boot just fine. And if it's good enough for Jerry... And dammit I suddenly want to go back to Albarracin after reading your plans!

Passat TDI Estate. A4/A6 TDI Avant.
320d touring if they can be had for less than the desired amount.
We did around 3000 miles around Europe last year with a 200k miles T reg passat. Booted it everywhere, fully loaded with 5 us and kit. Didn't lift the bonnet.

so, the shoulder is on the mend, and therefore the search is back on, i've spotted this in the classifieds and i'm just wondering if anybody has any experience of relatively high mileage vauxhall diesels http://beta.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...yes, it's not exciting, yes it's a diesel, and yes i'd rather have something more amusing, but this will also be serving as a stopgap untill i'm finished uni and can afford some 'broombroom banter'

I took a 180k mile Cavalier TD on a 3k mile wandering journey around northern Spain, southern France, and northern Italy, in the height of summer. It was 5-up all the time, and all through France was doing 90+.
It killed it. 3 days after getting home it left me stranded on the A14 with a blown HG. But, it was a 180k mile Cavalier. It behaved admirably over there, and I'm not surprised it died, having given it the full Ayrton on the valley roads.
I'd say you'll be fine. Go for it and enjoy. Get a roofbox. Your passengers won't appreciate having bags on/under legs for thousands of miles.

Vectra is definitely a good call, bloody massive. Although I would be looking at the Mondeo first, IMO. As a few posters have mentioned, they really are bloody brilliant second-hand buys Hope the shoulder sorts out in time

chongwong said: Also can't be more than 15 years old as i need breakdown cover in Europe Why not? Get ADAC cover and it's 85 euros for the year, when my 25 year old TVR broke down at the ring 2 years ago, they recovered it to Devon with no additional charge. Works in the UK too so no need for expensive AA cover
