What's the longest a dealer has kept a car for unsold?
Discussion
That dealer on the North Circ is like stepping into a time warp.
The car brochures are straight out of the 80's and in totally mint condition, which is more than can be said for the cars. Some of them have spare parts lying across seats etc and that white carlton has nasty peeling paint, and so does the E-Type. The stock outside does change and again some of it is in awful condition.
The SD1, D336CAC, I was told is one of the last made and car tax records show it came off the road in 1992. 1992! That's 20 years ago!! So, in answer to the OP we probably have our winner with this one
If you do get the chance do pop in and have a look around. You can park right outside too!

A local independent has a BMW Z4 for sale that was for sale before we moved out of the town 4 years ago and is STILL on the forecourt. I estimate 5 or 6 years its been for sale there. So unless it's the owners car, but right now it's back in the showroom. Used to be up for £15k IIRC and now under 10k

So just how long will he keep it I wonder?
Remember this? BMW Z4 is STILL on that dealers forecourt! Now down to £7995http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_popup.js...

Not possible. When a car is newly registered then it goes on the current plate. Unless it's 3 years old, then it will go on an age related. So if a 1980 MG was first registered in 1989 then it will go on a 1980 plate, but if registered in 1983 before its third birthday then it goes on a 83 plate.
Take the Capri 280. Came out on a D plate. Most are D's. Some are E's. There are 3 F's, and 1 G plate. Rumour has it there are three unregistered examples, and if you went to plate one of these it would simply go on a D plate as it's after the three year rule.
that is a relatively recent change to the system ( much like the person who maintained that ALL 2 digit prefix registrations were reserved by the DVLA for sale by auction - a change which happened in the mid to late 1990s initially it was just 1 to 21 that were reserved and the round hundreds / and 111, 222,... etc ) Take the Capri 280. there are hundreds if not thousands of vehicles running round with 'late' registrations ( both suffix and earlier prefix) based on the date of first UK registration , not date of manufacture including imports and ex MOD vehicles ...
When my father was after a W124 Cabrio (5.5 years ago), this was for sale back then.

No mileage increases, very few price decreases, a few picture cycles, but still at the same dealer... Goodness knows what's wrong with it (when he had interior pictures up, it looked fine), it has a fairly decent spec, and is one of the very last registered. Must be completely and utterly sd!

Some people just hang on too long. I went to look at a Nissan Bluebird Turbo when I had a normal Nissan Bluebird. It was for sale privately.
I was 17 or 18 at the time so this would have been circa 2006.
I had a look, he wanted around £1,000 and it had no MOT, needed a full respray and some of the bodykit was broken. I told the seller it was too expensive and offered him half the asking price. He refused and I left.
Guess what? In 2013 it's still for sale according to a Classic Car Free Ad site! It appears to have spent the last 7 years sitting axle deep in grass and mud so the underside, intact when I looked, is no doubt missing. According to the advert it hasn't moved under its own power since some time before I had a look. The best bit? He's increased the price to £1,800.
That's about £800 more than a running, MOTd ZX Turbo in usable condition is worth.

Is it red? If I'm looking at the right one then its gone down by £205 from the asking price you saw in 2006.I was 17 or 18 at the time so this would have been circa 2006.

When I saw this thread I immediately thought of the Old School Garage, aka www.classiccarshop.co.uk .
His stock almost never changes. I have been internet monging for cars more than ten years now and his is one of the sites I check every now and again. The r129 500SL he has had since the beginning, at least 8 years. Likewise the trio of SECs and the 500 SEL.
I assume it is not really a trading enterprise but rather a tax dodge: you like cars, you have a lot of them, you run a pretend trading business, you set all your costs against income tax.

Yes that's a bit of a bizarre website, very low budget for such nice cars. And what's with the family photos on the homepage? Someone needs to tell him no one cares, and he should be using that page to make impact with some old stock!!His stock almost never changes.
