I may be wrong but I'm sure the white Mondial in the classifieds has been with the same dealer for at least 6 years.

A few years ago I bought a very smart old Range Rover Classic at what I thought was a good price, thinking I could move it on quickly and make a few quid. The trouble was, it had the old Torqueflite three-speed autobox, probably the slowest vehicle ever to be powered by a V8 engine. It hung around for about two years until I finally got bored with wafting about in it and accepted an offer of about half the asking price. Specification is everything...

yes at least 6 years . . .you'd think that as prices have risen, they'd have sold it, nowt as queer as folk smile

At least some of the more upmarket cars, are on SOR, where the owner has an unrealistic asking price for a simple reason, they don't want to sell the car, they just want to be seen to be trying to sell it . . . which is why I've regularly advertised a friends car, so that he can tell his wife that he is trying, but there's little demand for them (the price has had to rise by over £100k in the past 3 years to keep it from selling!)

When I was in year 10 of school I remember reading through the classifieds of a classic car magazine and seeing an AC427 "Continuation" advertised by Rod Leach's Nostalgia (tied in with that lot that sold the Superformance Coupes and now do "new" GT40s). It was listed as immaculate and having featured in "Clarksons Car Years", and looked stunning in that metallic blue with white stripes and while knock-on Halibrands.

I am now in my second year at University. I opened the latest issue of Classic and Sports Car last week, and guess what car is at the top of the full-page Nostalgia Advert? biggrin

If I had a spare 100k or so I'd have it instantly

There's s guy on the Focus Rs site that bought one from a dealer that only had deliver miles on it.

It had stood in his showroom for nearly 9 years. The guy who has bought it has it in his garage that was custom built in a big plastic bubble. He still hasn't driven it. (it was delivered by lorry)
It will be the only original Ford in the country without rust.

This Pantera has been for sale at "Bob's affordable classics" (oh the irony!) for a few years now. Came onto the market a little shy of £100k now its at 69K..... I want it so badly. Its the first thing i am buying when my six numbers come up....

Some small dealers do seem to be struggling though, especially with stuff between 8 and 10 years old. there are a few near me in Bristol who have had the same stock for a while. 02/03 plate Beetle and Minis seem to hang around the forecourts like a bad smell...

Some cars are up for sale that long for some creative accounting purposes- They can mess around with their inventory , depreciation etc. A lot of creative accounting going on though......

I remember reading a very early copy of Auto Express where a woman bought a yellow MGB Roadster on a '89 G Plate that had been left in the back of a dealership unregistered.

If it was the latest year of production (1980, that must have been there approx 9 years.

He should sell it to the guy known as BonkeRS who has the amazing collection of delivery mileage XR's and RS's in Swansea.

This has been for sale for a good 6-7 years at a local garage. He also has a couple of others that seem to have been on the forecourt for years(Clio V6,Sierra cosworth,E-type jag,Bentley).
The Merc was advertised as the directors own car and over 100k new!

A prudent trader would eliminate the emotion.

Namely: unsold after 90 days = off to auction. At least convert the problem into cash.

The alternatives are all unpleasant; if you have the nerve to face them, either you
  • paid too much for it
  • deeply unattractive colour/specification
  • asking too much for it.
And in every case the answer is the same. No, you're not a very good second hand car trader....
Hmmmm, depends... Jaguar XJs and Citroën C6s are the highest depreciating cars over here according to market intelligence, both losing over 75% of their value in the first 36 months (which is a lot by Dutch standards), yet try and find a secondhand one advertised for a low price... you won't. Apparently they all get into the hands of traders who know they appeal to a very specific customer (and they won't appeal to a wider customer base even if they sold them off cheaply)... and they just wait until that customer comes along. Which a 100% mark up on trade/auction pricing doesn't make very hard to do.

yikes Blimey, that's a long time for a mainstream model - are you SURE it's the same car, not similar ones?

There's one I see in Classic Car type mags - I think the dealer is 'School Garage' or something?

Anyway he's had a silver Ferrari 308 GT4 for sale in his ads for easily 6 years - still up for the same price as when I first saw it - £18,500.

It's described with phrases like 'rarely do you see them like this' and 'the nicest one we have ever seen.'

I would add 'rarely do you see them for such an unrealistic, stratospheric price in such an unloved, unpopular colour' biggrin
Would that be the Mondial 8 he's had for almost a decade? . . . . . over priced by £10k!
Lollers, that's the one! Mondial, not 308...d'oh biggrin

Is it nearly 10 years now??????!!!!!!!!!!

I know a trader with a 997 C4S Cab initially started off wanting about 80k for it about 5/6 years ago. The price has steadily been dropping and still parked in the forecourt now with a price of about 45

I would have that in an instant if I had some spare cash- it will sell eventually; but I reckon you'll need a lot more than £100 k. Part of the problem with this sort of car is that a price is never listed. Puts off a lot of people- it is not as if we don't know it is expensive!

Not as long as lots on here, but I'll post anyway.

Part ex-d this on 9th October 2012, so they've had it 5 months. We got £9375 p/x, but only paid £10,280 brand new, so they were always having a laugh at £10,999!!!
