Please investigate this, it's so bizarre that I think you owe it to PH to do some digging. You can't leave us (me...?) dangling like this.

Go inside!

Audi 80, 1987 - 1990, I think a 1.8S from the seat trim.

Don't know who the bigger dork is, the owner, or the helmets telling him this "isn't a car for driving" FFS it's car! It's whole purpose is to be driven.
People get their pleasure from different aspects of owning a car, the lad in question owned one before this and used it every day. It's his car, his money and he's happy with his lot. Isn't that what owning a car for pleasure is all about?

Ahhh Walmsley Autos. I used to live literally next door to Maurice's garage (you can see the back wall of our chip shop when the car is outside). I can almost remember the day the RS arrived in the showroom! Quite a sight to an 18 year old petrol head. He had been bringing in Fords from Belgium for a year or so but this was the first and only interesting one. We didn't think he'd ever sell it.
Totally agree its his money, if he enjoys it good for him.

I'm thinking it's an 80.

There appears to be a Passat of early 2000 vintage in the showroom despite much of the newer stuff being outside.

Well I went and took some pics. It's quite sad really a bit like that american flikr garage thread looks abandoned even though it's not - I think I saw movement inside (probably wondering what the hell I was doing taking pics). Having said that, the stock (on the outside) seems to be different from the google images so they do seem to sell stuff. It just doesn't look like it! The cars inside mostly had flat tyres etc
The place is IIRC two garages Ketteringham (the former BL dealer with the old stock) and Northway which are separated by the abandoned shop. The owner of Ketteringham is apparently a friendly old boy and all the stock is for sale.
The yellow E type jag coupe at the back is IIRC a low mileage '73 and worth quite a lot.

Not possible. When a car is newly registered then it goes on the current plate. Unless it's 3 years old, then it will go on an age related. So if a 1980 MG was first registered in 1989 then it will go on a 1980 plate, but if registered in 1983 before its third birthday then it goes on a 83 plate.

Take the Capri 280. Came out on a D plate. Most are D's. Some are E's. There are 3 F's, and 1 G plate. Rumour has it there are three unregistered examples, and if you went to plate one of these it would simply go on a D plate as it's after the three year rule.

Most 280s are actually E reg (at least 70% if not more) NOT D reg - D reg 280s are rare , whereaes in 2.8i Special it is vice versa.
I'm not too sure about 3 year rule as i have seen late reg cars with newer plates above 3 yrs- DVLA confusingly seem to have an individual policy on each car

There's a really good story about the North London garage here:

Thanks for sharing the link.

I've now got an overwhelming urge to visit the showroom and listen to stories from the owner.

no specifics but this garage on the north circular (london thread) never seems to sell anything. Just has these dusty old motors outside. There's nothing about the place that would make you want to stop and go in... I might have a look tomorrow and compare their stock with the google pic

Next to the Shell garage right?I used to drive past them nearly every day in the 90's and they never seemed to shift anything, in fact it looked (and still does) as if the showroom and stock seemed abandoned , never saw anyone walking round the cars, never saw a salesman , never saw anyone cleaning them.

Nope, I just saw this thread and remembered a link from 6 years ago. Then had to hunt IMOC for the details.

Sorry.

I'm only going on what I read in Auto Express. They printed a photo of said MGB complete with G prefix number plate.

I went past this place today and it doesn't look like somewhere you would want to buy a car from. It's also not an easy place to get to if you drive past it it looks like a bit of a mission to get back round to it.

Just spotted this thread, I've seen that place on the A406 before!

Really weird, but some quite cool cars in there really. Cavalier's, 205 etc
