What's the longest a dealer has kept a car for unsold?
Discussion
1999 Alfa 156 Twin Spark at a dealer for £695. Gets a new MOT every year and he's been trying to sell for at least 2 years to my knowledge.
I keep getting tempted and then wondering what's wrong with it that it won't sell... don't want to ask to look at it again in case he labels me a time waster

There's a 2003 03 plate MX5 at a dealer near me in Warrington near the big Tesco
come September its been there 2 years
I noticed the sills where rotten, and now the sills look fixed
me thinks its had the outer cosmetic sills done but the rot inside is still there.
he wants £3999 for it, price is same as Sept 2011
avoid.

Interesting thread, I've passed by the north circular garage many times going to and from London, fascinating to hear the story behind it!
Most of the bigger places do indeed work on 90-day stock plans. I got a bit of a bargain once buying a 2 and a half year old car from a dealer for only a little over trade price as a result of that. Tyres were flat-spotted though.

Listed as 'awaiting preparation' under the Skoda... which is red
I part-exchanged this in October 2011, STILL for sale!!!
http://www.thecarpeople.co.uk/find-a-car/car-detai...
I was offered £9370 p/x, I'd only paid £10,280 for it new 6 months previously, I couldn't get the pen in my hand quick enough!! They had it up at £10,999 to start with, even though Seat were advertising the same model at £10995.
I doubt they will have had it serviced, and the warranty will be nulled surely? There is nothing wrong with it, its just far far far too expensive.

This has been for sale since at least June last year (when I first come across it). No price drop (hard on a 1K car I admit, but after a year of not shifting, you would lower it a bit?!), no new photos, no tax

This http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-Civic-TYPE-R-EK9-P... has been on ebay for 3 years I reckon and the price has not budged at all.
If you look at his other cars for sale the blue and white MX5s have both been on there over two years and the silver Integra a good year or so.

A DeTomaso Longchamp advertised for god knows how long with some unappealing photos and a frankly rude description (instructions).

A prudent trader would eliminate the emotion.
Namely: unsold after 90 days = off to auction. At least convert the problem into cash.
The alternatives are all unpleasant; if you have the nerve to face them, either you
I noticed a 53 reg audi A4 tdi estate in 2010 in a local dealers. In 2011 when I was looking to buy a similar car, I popped in and suggested that if It were £1500 cheaper I might trouble him for a test drive, but I didn't want to waste his time otherwise. I was given a curt response. Namely: unsold after 90 days = off to auction. At least convert the problem into cash.

- paid too much for it
- deeply unattractive colour/specification
- asking too much for it.
In 2012, exactly a year after I asked, he still had it, but it was being taken away by a debt collection company along with all his stock as he went bust.
I'm not a used car dealer, but I would have to have a 90 day rule.
Some of these are incredible!
The one that sticks in my mind is an indy garage in Manchester with a Range Rover Sport S/C. Was back in 2008 & I first noticed the car in February. I used to drive past it everyday & it started at £19995, by October he had dropped it to £18995. I would have thought it would have depreciated more than that!

Top bloke though! Used to work on my MX5's when I lived round there. The high priced blue and white Roadsters have been there for nearly 5 years. That Civic has been there for years now. It is immaculate though in the flesh but still not worth £7250!If you look at his other cars for sale the blue and white MX5s have both been on there over two years and the silver Integra a good year or so.

Colour me unsurprised the vendor hasn't shifted this.A DeTomaso Longchamp advertised for god knows how long with some unappealing photos and a frankly rude description (instructions).
As you say the advert is downright rude to the extent that even if I was specifically in the market for a shabby and overpriced shed of a DeTomaso I would go out of my way to avoid this one. What a knob.

and I think we should include one of the owner, Derek
Well, looks like Derek has sold up. Last couple of days they've been removing cars on recovery vehicles, and tonight I notice webbs of Ealing have taken over the premises. Webbs seem to mostly sell vans. Webbs of Ealing used to be on the bridge near Ealing Common close to where north circ meets Uxbridge road.flickr pics

When I was in year 10 of school I remember reading through the classifieds of a classic car magazine and seeing an AC427 "Continuation" advertised by Rod Leach's Nostalgia (tied in with that lot that sold the Superformance Coupes and now do "new" GT40s). It was listed as immaculate and having featured in "Clarksons Car Years", and looked stunning in that metallic blue with white stripes and while knock-on Halibrands.
I am now in my second year at University. I opened the latest issue of Classic and Sports Car last week, and guess what car is at the top of the full-page Nostalgia Advert?
If I had a spare 100k or so I'd have it instantly

I seem to remember him having an "ex-midnight club" RX7 : "does over 200mph" apparently, for a very long time as well.
That's the RX7 I was referring to. I don't know if it's still for sale.
edit - https://lifeat200mph.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/midn... Seems it was still for sale in March 2015.
