dhf, for attention you want to try taking an Exige S1 to Donegal. I gad it parked in the ain street in Buncrana for a several hours a few years ago and the whole town seemed to be taking photos.

Okay, the Exige is a nice car but lets not be silly, it's not the stuff of legend like these classic Renaults! I absolutely love them.

No it's not a Renault Maxi 5 Turbo: it's a regular Turbo 2 with a Maxi-style bodykit. Renault Sport only produced the necessary 20 genuine Maxi 5 Turbos for homologation. A fair few of those were promptly dismantled for spares. Since the works Renault team only competed in a handful of rounds of the WRC, there were very few genuine works car made. This probably makes them one of the rarest of all the Group B works cars. Renault did make the required 200 Turbo 2 road cars with a slightly higher displacement (but no other noteable differences). These are known as the "8221" model cars, as opposed to the other about 4800 "8220" model Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 cars. nerd
Free carcheck says its a Renault 5 GT turbo, it would seem that its a copy.

Surely a contender for the most awesome wheel rims to roll out of a factory?

Those and the pumped up, slatted rear wings take me back to very fond memories of holidays in France in the late 80's where my brother and I would engage in slightly cooler carspotting games than we could back here.

The last one I can remember seeing in apparently daily use was a black one being driven by a Tabatha Cash lookalike in Le Touquet, some time in the mid 90's. cloud9

I am sure it's an R5T2. These cars were never officially imported by Renault, so the DVLA did not have an exact match. They just took the easy option. They were all registered as "Gordinis" or "GT Turbos" or even boggo R5s.

Awesome.

How nimble was that?

clap to Renault for making it, and clap again to Renault for (loosely) recreating it with the Clio V6.

Pretty sure that was a T1 as it sat in their showroom for ages. Btw anyone who missed here's my ex Derek Warwick Turbo 2 which I've had for 20 odd years

These really are such a fabulous car with awesome road presence, I'd almost go as far to say that i'd rather have one of these over a similarly priced Ferrari 355. It's good to be a bit left field.

Used to be one of these at the bottom of my road on occasion in Old Hatfield - I'd go on incessantly about how special it was - nobody listened to me at 9 - I was right though !
Still have a very scruffy brochure for a T2 all in French !

Awesome little cars. I've seen Jean Ragnotti last two years running at the Renault World Series, puts on a fantastic show in his R5!

mine was a R5 Turbo le car 2 or somesuch on its papers, basically it meant i paid tiny insurance for it,even though i pointed out out that its engine was in the boot to the insurance company
