How?
There are plenty of bona fide sports cars out nowadays with no manual option.

(I wish this weren't true, but its the way of the world these days)

Fail.

It looks like Jaguar aren't capable of putting out a proper-looking car since the D-type.
Really! I think you will be in small minority there, personally i think ther entire current jag line up looks great, in fact best in each of there respective class' (maybe not the XK which whilst it is beautiful, has some stiff competition).

Also Fail. is not a sentence.

Why are so many slating this car because they think it has an auto. 'box? Where does it state that in the article? What if it will have a manual 'box fitted as standard?

Can I say I'm more than a little excited. However...

The undoing of this car could be its gearbox. If they truly want to take the fight to BMW and Porsche, it needs to have a properly responsive 'box - either a traditional H-pattern manual or a paddleshift which changes gear precisely when the driver wants it to.

Otherwise, if it's slushbox-only, then no matter how good it is as an autobox it'll still be in SLK-ville.
Amen brother - an H gate manual made a world of difference for the 911 challenging credentials of the R8. With off the shelf offerings from Tremec et al this should be a shoe in. I think a certain Mr Leno might be persuaded to buy the coupe when it arrives, especially if it is a manual!

What is it about the introduction of promising British-made cars that brings out the prophets of doom ?

The car hasn't been seen, driven or even specified in it's final form and yet we have a plethora of "experts" ready to condemn it for everything from looking too much like a Jaguar to not being a true sports car.

With Jaguar's current good form why shouldn't it be a winner ?

Regarding the probable competition - the only decent car in the Boxster class is the Boxster. The Jaguar will be much better looking and surely we're all sick of Boxsters anyway.

The 911 convertible isn't competiton for anything, unless you find the elephant man attractive, and it looks like the Jaguar will be priced below it anyway.

Personally I hope the Jaguar will just be a very good sports car, it's not necessary for it to be aligned or competing directly with existing products.

Rather like the E-type and the XK120 before it in fact.

Agree twincam, a slush box is a total no-no for this car.
Why? Have you driven a modern torque converter auto? They're not quite as snappy as a good DSG/PDK, but they have many other benefits, like much better performance at lower speeds. A well calibrated modern torque converter in no way gets in the way of driving any more than any flappy paddle 'box. Changes are quick and snappy, and downshifts are nicely blipped.

Now....I love having a pedal to the left of the brake, but you have to accept that the majority of customers these days actually prefer auto's, and banging down through the gears with the paddles to perfect whoop, crackle, whoop, bang crackle, whoop is actually quite fun.

The key selling point for the E-type was its cheapness and performance, at the time of its release it was as quick as the ferraris et al at a non ridiculous price.

As much as I like this, I was expecting a lower price, and would prefer to just spend £25k on a mk3 E-type, can't beat a V12!

I think this car looks terrific, I really hope it continues the Jaguar success story. FWIW I've authorised the purchase of two XF-S's, an XJ and two Discovery's for folk in my company, they've all been perfect so far, one of the XF's has done over eighty thousand miles already and is likely to become an XF Sportwagen when they become available. Such a shame the Dealers are such a lackluster bunch !

I'm not suggesting it has to be manual - dsg/pdk would be fine. Jaguar though are stating this is going to be a proper, nimble sports car. To me that cannot equate to a car with a full-on automatic torque converter box.

Calm down. What's to shout about..?
We've so little Brit car industry left that anything worthy is another victory.
Don't ever doubt that the best in the world isn't built or supplied hereabouts.. It damn well is.
Jaguar. Ever since the E type started to get a bit baggy at the end of the 60's.. thousands of us have waited for, longed for, the next BIG thing.. herewith F type.
I would say Hallelujah. And not before time.
It's not German nor Italian, it shouldn't cost mental money, it should go well AND at heading for £7 gallon.. it should provide reasonable fuel mileage..
But it is BRITISH.. for Gawds sake stop carping, get over your anti Brit prejudices, and just be proud..!!

You driven any of the modern jags to make such a bold statement?

I assume that means the UK market?
Remarkably, that's global: it really is a small sector indeed. Porsche, for instance, sold 17,607 911 globally in 2011.

It's not a bold statement in any way. Just my opinion. I love the C-X16 and have an LOI in with my dealer. I will, of course, defer judgement until I drive one but in my eyes a torque converter does not belong in a nimble sports car.

Let's move on now as its only one man's opinion and probably means diddly smile

Looks a little bit like an S2000.
That's not a bad thing though.
Was just about to post that (certainly not a bad thing) - are the photos of a "funny painted" actual car or will it look different?
I agree about the S2000 looks, especially the side profile.
