Just to stick my oar in - I highly recommend Classic Heroes. Barney there is ex-Munich Legends and is a great mechanic & car dealer. Where Munich Legends have lost their way of late Barney is genuine enthusiast and a great mechanic. He looks after my e39 M5 and I've nothing but good words to say about him.

The rarity & value of the cars his customers get him to service, prep, race prepare etc says it all.

What a beautiful, iconic machine.

A friend of mine has one, again in Diamond Black.

IIRC it's number 50 / 187 (but don't quote me on that!).

It has the M-Tech body kit, but still looks superbly subtle. Very fast car, and the nose just lifts up when he plants it!

It one of the cars in the fleet for my wedding - fully waxed up with white ribbons.

Forget chavtastic limos - we had a W140 S500L, followed by an X308 XJ Executive, followed closely by an E28 M5. It turned so many heads, and I was proud to have it as one of my wedding cars!

Looked fantastic as we were travelling along the M25 - the amount of looks we got...

He used to own a BMW specialist garage, and managed to persuade an old customer to sell it to him for just £4k! It's worth atleast £12k now, and given it's rarity, will only appreciate in value.

It has to be one of the meanest front ends ever to grace a 5 Series!

Also highly recommended by a friend who has a few proper M's:

"The best man for the job of fettling the M5 is Darren Farrell 01787 223644 or 07807 689538 he is a one man band but a proper engineer one time Aston Martin development engineer and is a wizard!"
Rule number 1: don't belive everything you read on the internet.
Seconded, Avoid!!!

Chris,

Take it to Barney Halse at Classic Heroes - he's ex Munich Legends butt way more value. Look at his website. He llooks after my CSL so i speak from experience.

PM me if you'd like to know more.

Tim
I wouldn't!
Munich bellends got that tag for a reason... and Barney is/was one of the ex-owners. A leopard and his spots, etc...

If you're looking for someone down that way (Surrey/Sussex) then try Mark McLennan at MJF Engineering...he knows those engines inside out as he races a M635csi (same engine)...
Alex Elliot is another chap in the same area who is a whizz with (BMW) racing cars..

ETA: if you do end up going to Barney, make sure the car is returned with all the original parts intact! I know people who have taken their cars to (the old) Munich Legends and had (for example) the complete LS diff and diff cooler exchanged for an open, non-cooled version!

What a great car. I remember my own M535i, kept it for ten years and was always entertaining, particularly in the wet and the perfect Q car.
If you are looking for somebody to look after it I always used Barney who was then at Munich legends and who is now running Classic Motors.
Enjoy it, they don't make them like that anymore!!!

Love the older M5s. Regarding the size, they look tiny when you park next to modern incarnations. Both my E36M Vert and my Corrado VR6 look minuscule parked next to the bloated chubby E92/3 and Scirrocco respectively

Now we're talking!! This thing was virtually unbreakable. Used to run it on, er, worn rears.

First thing I would look at is if the car has any form of aftermarket alarm/immobiliser?

If it has no fuel or spark or doesn't even turn over the above could explain the lot.

Fuel pump whirrs, can smell fuel. Starter seems to push crank quite fast. Would appear no spark.

Sound like Forza West it is - like the idea of somebody reasonably close by.

This is why I rarely post here - two regular customers recommend a great garage - and someone living in Oliver Stone conspiracy thoery world decides that a busy garage would strip out parts on cars! There's plenty of 9/11 boards out there for paranoia fella...

I've never understood the amount of times I've seen running an E34 M5 = High Running costs.
As a 17 year old lad I haven't owned one myself but my Dad looks after an E39 B10 4.6 and an E34 3.8 6Spd for a friend, most of the time with me helping. It has upward of 110k on it and had been left on grass in the guys back garden (I still cringe) for 18 months before my Dad told him to get ticket on it, apart from a noisy viscous fan and a rather saggy rear end due to worn bushes it's in good order. As long as you're not talking EDC components and front Floating disc assemblies then parts aren't miles more expensive than a 535i of the same vintage, they even share some parts... I'll admit that things such as adjusting the valve clearences, that bugger of a Viscous coupling can be quite tricksome and time consuming so they would drive labour charges up, they're not massively hard to tackle yourself if you have a set of spanners and an internet connection.

As for the E28, they've always held a special place in my heart, my earliest memory isn't watching Teletubbies or anything of the sort, it's my Dad kicking the back end of his M535i out. LSD + Dogleg Getrag = Smiles all 'round and while the E34 is my personal favourite, BMW never quite got the styling as good as they did with the E28, it has so much road presence without being a menace and there's always a special feeling when those who know what it is give you 'the nod'

EDIT: Added a pic of the E34 because it'd be rude not to wink
