RE: PH Fleet: BMW M5 (E28)
Discussion
Very nice, I love them. I'm in greece at the moment and there are loads of rust free E28s around. Hmmm.
Would have one, but don't need the space and it's still a big barge, similar in size to the new 3 series.
In many ways, the E39 M5 is at least as special. Eventually, they will both appreciate in value. Buy them for peanuts whilst you still can.

Nice car - only E28 I've ever driven was a 525e, which wasn't the most exciting proposition.

So, can ECUs perish, wear-out or become less efficient after time?
Not perish or wear out, as such, but the legs of any chip will corrode a bit eventually, and the resulting minute quantities of gunge(*) can sometimes bridge between two legs and intermittently short them together, especially when damp. Either that or a solder joint can crack with age.(*) to give it its technical name

Ouch! But I can easily believe it! The restoration of the last E28 that I did often brought me close to tears and it wasn't even an M5.
Really look forward to seeing your current project develop! Keep us updated.
Possibly as a warning to others but also for the pleasure of seeing the sheer art my friend Tony's work in progress you might like to take a look at this thread. It's an E28 M5 that ostensibly didn't look 'that bad'....well, not as bad as it turned out to be. It's long but it's worth viewing (and somewhere in there are 3 links to the last E28 that I did...before, during and after):

I mean, just look at it:
CPC Phil Crouch still does great work on the e28's. He has looked after my E34 for five years and older M cars are only expensive to run if firstly you don't drive them hard, often, and you don't keep on top of the rust etc. Hand built, light, properly quick and just an all round great drive. Oh and Phil will be buying a new Sunseeker once I have paid him for the recent work on my E34 M5!!

Cannot get excited about this car at all. I know it was the first of the M5's, hand-built and used the Modified M1 engine but it's just so dated. All the people complaining about the soul less M5's really need to drive one and appreciate how far Technology has come. I'll keep my E61 thanks.
I don't know why you can't love them both. I know I'd much rather have this than an F10, but an E61 is a different story. They're the best Bangle design, and I think they're going to age extremely well - they already look better and better every day. And then in wagon form, too? Well that makes it a very hard decision.timothymcn said:

If we had access to the Bangle M5 with the US spec manual transmission I would want one in Touring form. In fact I would probably have bought a new one if that had been the case.Great Pretender said:

In theory it sounds great, but the people who have driven the US version with the manual box haven't been blown away by it.Big Six said:
Disconnect the ABS ECU above the main ECU in the glove box before trying to jump it.
Not shore where you are based but to be on the safe side I would send it to Munich legends http://www.munichlegends.co.uk/ or http://www.classicheroes.co.uk/default
You might try removing & then reinstalling all the fuses & replays in the engine bay. Just sounds like you have a bad contact.
I personally would avoid both of the above mentioned establishments....Not shore where you are based but to be on the safe side I would send it to Munich legends http://www.munichlegends.co.uk/ or http://www.classicheroes.co.uk/default

Although the current owners of ML I guess deserve a chance, the previous ones are all at Classic Heroes....

Stu is the top man. He looked after my M5, and I trust him and his team implicitly. I'd go there; if only to walk around and drool over whatever is in at the moment!
In fact, I'll stake my reputation on you being happy with his service.

Awesome MacAwesome from Awesomeshire.
If i can suggest Phil Crouch at CPC Engineering for all bork related issues as the man is a magician.
No question, Phil at CPC is your man. Took my E39 there after BMW Oxford said "just under 3k for one Vanos". Phil fixed it is 20 minutes with a soldering iron and a resistor!Awesome MacAwesome from Awesomeshire.
