I think everybody will agree with me that the plastic key is a bit disappointing to say the least...

The glass key is nice but fragile and as I understand many users do not dare taking it all the time due to the cost of replacing one (£950 !!!!)

One of my companies censored makes bespoke limited run carbon fibre items and I am tempted to do a carbon fibre case to replace the plastic one of the spare key.

The case would be high quality real carbon fibre, twill weave (1.5k or 3k size), high-gloss finish. Cost would be in the order of 1/10 of the glass key :-)

If I can get a few people interested here, I will get costings. Let me know what you think.

I think this is a great idea. Alas, my car doesn't use an ECU. However, what about making it possible to attach it to a key ring? Then, those of us with a Volvo key fob could buy one to replace our current unit and have it programmed by the dealer. Or, have a new design that we can transplant the guts of the existing Volvo unit into.

I'm interested. Any chance of a matte finish like on the V12V door pulls instead of the high gloss?

Add another if the swap is simple. My issues have been with the soft buttons more than the case. If that is part of the planned fix, I am in for sure.

You can refurb the crystal keys - the glass / case / guts are available seperately

I'm sure the dealer told me the cost of the glass ECU had come down to £400.... I could be wrong... But would also be interested in something a little more classy to replace the plastic one.

While I'm thinking about it: definitely would be nice to have a large AM logo embedded into the resin too. smile

I heard the price had halved but I didn't ask where that put it.
