Why does engine capacity make any difference to anything?
Because traditionally more engine = more money.
Think Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche etc...

confused They're high end sports cars, this is an SUV/hatchback thing. And anyway, those cars aren't expensive because they have big engines.

ETA: 80k for an ugly, impractical three-door hatchback on stilts may be ridiculous, but that's nothing to do with its engine size.

Agreed.
Unfortunately so much of modern life is about boasting big figures and Pistonheads is not immune from this. To a lot of folk value means xxxxcapacity, xxxxbhp, xxxxmph whether or not it is any good is often irrelevant.

When you pay £80k it's reasonable to be able to see where the money went.
In this case it looks like £2k went into the wheels and £78k into the Beckam's bank account.

TBH if I wanted to subsidise overpaid, undereducated footballers I'd just buy a Sky Sports subscription.
And a decent car I could look at without grabbing at the nearest bucket.

You're right, no-one seems to want understated elegance anymore. It is more a case of "If you've got it, flaunt it".
Even if it's hideous and crass. It's a natural progression of NuLabours Chav breeding program - there are a hell of a lot of them about now and they are starting to drive and collect their own benefits.

What I can't understand is the mindset of the person who thinks the Beckam's are cool or have anything to teach us about style!!!
I don't think it's much to do with Labour (yes I know it's PH so it's customary to blame them) but a general trend in Western culture to obtain fame at any cost, and that happiness is achieved through money. If you can stomach it for more than 30 seconds, just look at the dreadful examples in programs like Real Housewives of Orange Country or Jersey Shore. At Least David Beckham is famous for actually having a talent, as opposed to a karaoke singer who married the right person. Then you have people like Kerry Katona, Peaches Geldof, Jordan Tamara Ecclestone etc - famous for either sleeping around, or having a famous daddy who got them the career they wanted. Sometimes you can understand why Al Qaeda want us blown up

Remember that phrase "money shouts, class whispers"? Whilst we all have our own idea of what's classy, if I had £80k to spend my first thought would be along the lines of a classic Maserati or Bristol - something that in my mind would be appreciated and not run the risk of being keyed every time you parked it.

Not a huge amount per se, but I'd imagine if you took down the average performance of cars within a similar price bracket, you'd find this to be substantially lacking in the majority of departments.

Given that the Evoque is a car that has completely lacked credibility from the start I am surprised this news has made such a splash here.
I know what you mean.

They came out with the concept and it got rave reviews. Then not so long after, the production version arrives and looks much the same. Now it's performing extemely well in every test against its rivals and LR are struggling to keep up with the demand for it...

Yes but this isn't a performance car. It's a fashion accessory (and a very popular one at that).

Everyone goes on about the bmw x6 as being pointless, but why the double standards with a 4x4 that has 2 doors!????
'
My theory is that its probably down to the fact LR are built in the uk so people decide to ignore major details that would bring the trolls of ph out had any of the superior engineered german brands made anything similar.

Anyway, congrats to tata and india for sorting both LR and jaguar and turning them into competitive brands.

Still and ugly sh*t car though.

May I ask what's wrong with a 2 door 4*4?

that being said I'm not convinced about this - the "Beckham brand" thing baffles me totally, I'm sure he's a nice enough person (and at a push I'd say the same for her) but this whole thing about them selling an "aspirational lifestyle" purleeeze!

What does this even mean?
It's a series of marketobks given by the PR company to Victoria Beckham to say to the press.

Anyone who says people like her (and Katie Price and all the others) are successful, independent businesswomen to be applauded are deluded. They're mere figureheads, products for PRs, designers and ghost-writers to hide behind and use as a 'brand' in order to sell more. I very much doubt she did anything other than leaf through a catalogue going 'I like that, I like that, I don't like that'.

I'd forgotten how damn good the original looked!! The Evoque really is a steaming pile of eyesore.

Not yet. It's the exact reason cars like original RR Classics are reaching £80k. Seeing more and more of them in London along with Defenders.

A chap in Mayfair has a matt black vinyled Talbot Samba as a piss take of all the pie people in the area.

It's no different to Yank car design in the late 50s. Just a different form of it.

Big fins, lots of chrome etc.

Nothing to do with Labour, despite them being the whipping boy for those of the Daily Mail is a Socialist rag bent on here.
Yet only chavs seem to own them..
Stop talking arse.

Or do you have some very rich chavs round your ends?

Not my cup of tea but if it helps maintain JLRs position as a bit of a success story in a very difficult market then they can fill their boots!

Landrover did the best thing by moving into the lifestyle market back in the early 1990's but unfortunately some enthusiasts of the brand are still lamenting the move from leafs to coils wink

The world went mad years ago and the car market in the west is pretty stagnant, let them milk the cash rich east if it allows the profit to be used to develop cool stuff for our markets.
