Heavy clutches are fairly much a thing of the past with any car let alone performance cars.

Totally agree. Had a weekend a while ago driving a manual V8 and a GT3 - 800 miles and no motorways, it was bliss.

A friend of mine has the V8 version, and I've been lucky enough to borrow it a few times. It's totally standard, but it sounds incredible, whether standing still, bimbling along at 30 or having the backside ragged off it.

By contrast, a V10 drove past me the other day as I was walking along, and I could barely hear it. So, on noise alone, I'd take a V8.

not to sure about weight distribution, but corvette ZR1 springs to mind?
!!

630+ BHP actually. That is exactly what I have traded my V10 spyder manual for, a new Corvette ZR1. The R8 was a fantastic car and had it almost two years but after owning 3 previous Corvettes I can't wait to get back into a shiny new Z, being delivered this Friday. I'll pretend that the dash and interior doesn't resemble a 1980's Datsun as best I can.

Mad? Maybe....

Personal and all that, but the V10 howl knocks the socks of the V8

I have the R8 V10 Manual, with full Miltek race exhaust system and custom code remap, now pushing out 600ps. I just love it :-)

maybe not all cars but surely all supercars? I'd still stare at an r8 they arent subtle, more so than a gallardo i grant you but not by much. Last r8 i saw was chasing a ferrari down the a470 at triple digits and it was a great sight (both red) and sounded amazing (very loud) though i still would take the ferrari.

Subtle and brand irrelevant i'd save a wedge and take a gtr.

Had a go in a manual, but the clutch was pretty heavy going, and in stop-start traffic it got on my nerves after a while. Having said that, you have to hand it to the R8 (both variants). it's a ridiculously capable and practical supercar, one you could really live with day-to-day. But is that what a supercar should be? Does it feel as special as a Ferrari or Lambo? i'm not so sure...

I agree with the sentiment of the article but there are a couple of other cars worthy of consideration in the same vein

Aston V12 manual coupe, also available for around 90k with low miles - not quite as fast probably, particularly round a track, but manual, old school, great noise, less techy but more beautiful interior and with that step up in prestige that an audi can't offer, to answer the critics who've posted on here about same

various 911 Gt3, for instance 997 gen 2 RS around 95k now. Not a V10/12, but manual, (exceptionally) well balanced, not as practical a proposition as an R8 for an everyday car of course

I've driven the R8, both V10 and V8 and have also driven various Gallardo’s, all on both track and road. And I have to say the R8 is the better road car. I truly believe it is faster point to point car as the suspension set up is more compliant therefore it rides a lot better. The Gallardo's have a stiffer setup that tends to cause issues especially in bumpy corners where the transition to oversteer is a lot more abrupt. The R8 is a lot more predictable so allowing you to make more of its abilities.

Another major plus for the R8 is that it is a lot more accommodating for the larger frame like me. After an hour in a Gallardo I need to get out as I get cramp

I agree that it looks a bit... boring. It's a car to aspire to, but it never was poster material. For some people that can be a good thing, but I'd want my £ 100k car to look more like a fighter jet than an Audi TT.
This post could have been mine until I finally saw one in the wild a couple of months ago.

It was much bigger and much better looking than I expected, and while not striking like some other exotics it got my attention and I wasn't thinking TT.

The biggest problem i'd have buying one of these is a lack of funds. The second biggest problem would be the gallardo. The baby lambo just seems better looking, more dramatic and people would see you as a lambo driver not an audi driver. I know gallardos are a common sight in some areas but they arent in south Wales. Cant help feeling the r8 would get lost amongst the sea of tt's that litter the streets and if i was shelling out 100k thats not what i'd want. By far my favourite audi though.
Medallion and suntan or shiny suit and hair-gel? Hmm...
You don't need either chap. Each time I drove my R8 V10 I can't remember when I last had a car that drew so much attention, and I've had a few, (the car that is, not me). Many many people of all ages commented what a fantastic looking and sounding car it is. It's beautifully built, sounds amazing (especially when the flaps open up in the exhaust, in fact the sound is hard to beat I reckon and hearing that V10 whirring behind your head is unreal. Add to that a sure footed safe and predictable handling car that goes down the road and around corners putting a monster grin on my face and that has reasonably held up price wise, I have no regrets in buying one.

In fact, before it's collected on Friday for the exchange I best get my camcorder in there for some aural memories....!

With aftermarket exhaust, you really do get some real noise from it, here is a video of me leaving with friends, you will hear my car fire up out of shot on 8 seconds :-)

I own an R8 V8 manual.

They are really nice cars. OK, the V10 is quicker, but on UK roads the V8 is plenty quick enough. The noise from that V8 at high revs is addictive.

They are still pretty rare cars on the road, so it always attracts the heads of passers by. Mines Black with Silver side blades.

Another reason for getting the R8, is that it isn't a 911. (11's are everywhere, so it's nice to drive around in something that isn't the default choice. Saying that, a GT3 would be nice to own too.

Never driven the V10, but I'm quite happy with my V8 thanks.

I looked at an Aston V12 before I bought my R8 V10 which I use every day. The Aston had a crap seating position, off-set pedals, gear change so far back it was silly, felt nose heavy and was nowhere near as fast and pointy as an R8.

GT3 is a completely different car to the R8, I sold a Gen 2 just before I got my V10. Great, great car which you can use everyday (with lifting system) but nowhere near as good a road car overall. Obviously a better track car, but I would never take a road car on track.

I agree with this article 100%. For the money a V10 R8 is THE best everyday road car. Very usable, silly quick and only £400 to service!!! But please only in manual, tried an R-Tronic, the worst gear change in any car. Ever.

£400 service!!! That's outstanding... I know from personal experience that performance Audi's are relatively cheap to service but that is amazing. What does that cover, does it include the 4WD system? Main dealer or Indie specialist?

Maybe its just me but the Gen 1 Gallardo just doesn't look that great. I know there are barely any differences w/ the Gen 2 but the 560 onwards are magnificient. Perhaps its just the rear lights.

Anyway, one reason to pick a Gallardo over a V10 R8 is the noise: for some reason the Gallardos just sound better. Not sure if its an internal thing or just an exhaust thing and hence easily fixable.

And from what I can see amongst most "non-car" people the R8 may as well be a Lambo due to its low and wide stance, not to mention its association with the Iron Man films.

My non-petrolhead best mate's ultimate car is a Murci, followed by a Gallardo followed by an R8. (He drives an A4 so perhaps he just likes VAG wink )

Personally I'd love an R8 as I love open-gated manuals and the R8 is probably the only current car with an open-gate manual full stop, and certainly the only one you can drive everyday (I've heard some horror stories about Gallardos)
