Obviously these have been taken by the authorities now but what's to stop people turning up at the airport and robbing these abandoned cars? Not as if they're going to be reported as stolen is it?
If you get stopped, it might take a lot of talking to get you out of whatever the previous owner owes?adz13091982 said:
I think the reason this happens a lot is because of lot of these cars are bought with post dated cheques rather than traditional credit and bouncing cheques will land you in jail in UAE. When people loose their jobs they tend to flee back to the UK before the cheques start bouncing.
close. if you take a bank loan out here you have to sign an undated cheque to cover the full amount. however, if you lose your job, it is a legal requirement that your company informs the bank of your situation. you then have a certain period of time [can't remember offhand] by which to repay your debts, or face jail time. being between jobs can even be tricky as your bank may get tetchy about no money going into your account despite you having enough in there to cover your loan repayment and they can freeze your assets and recall the loan. it can be hassle if simply changing companies, but generally if you live beyond your means you are setting yourself up for a hard fall. a lot of flash harrys and fly by nights leading the champagne lifestyle of tick got caught out in the downturn, and elected to jump ship before the banks had time to flag up their debt with the authorities.

There was one of those 'homes from hell' (could have actually been it) about what happens when things go wrong for expats in the ME and would ring true in this case.
One family were made to sign post dated cheques for the 'loan' on their property in Dubai, then the guy lost his job, they literally had to get them and the 3 kids out of the country sharpish.

Even if you could pick up the Enzo for reasonable money, it will cost you a fortune to restore it to average european condition. A customer of my local sportscar garage bought a F430 from Dubai. Looked marvelous outside but there was bloody sand in every space all inside, every gap filled up with dirt. Lots of electronical trouble due to the sand and they hadn't even looked inside the cylinders yet. The loom looked as if he car had been parked 10 feet deep in a pond for a week. Not a bargain in the end...

The guy could afford an Enzo, but racked up too many traffic fines, so he just abandoned the car and went home.
Can someone do a better job of explaining that for me, that makes no sense!
I am led to believe as others have said that if you default on payment you go straight to jail. Unlikely to be traffic fine related, more likely to do with the property price collapse. I'm told that there is a wealth of cars dumped at the airport. Given the choice of prison or dump the Enzo, I'm with dumping the Enzo. Can someone do a better job of explaining that for me, that makes no sense!
I met a guy from Germany a good few years back who spent over a year in jail in the middle east without any trial. By all accounts a very unpleasant experience. The guy he worked for eventually secured bail for him and another chap that was also arrested at the same time. They were allowed to leave the country but had to return for the trial. If they failed to return for the trial. The bail set was that his employer would forfit his life.

Yeh here it is http://auto.howstuffworks.com/enzo4.htm
Surely if the authorities were that bothered in tracing any past owner it'd be simple?
