So funny reading this after a discussion with a colleague of mine who thought China was still just full of sweat shops! How little so some people realise how China and India are on the up.
Indeed. I have newer data to this, but it shows the trend. Worth looking at the bottom chart on Page 19 and where China resides.ellisd82 said:

well with a billion there are bound to be at least a few millionaires. But it is built on serfdom and how long it lasts will see. It's not built on serfdom, it's built on the fact wages are much lower there, hence they can produce things a lot more cheaply
The problems will start once the East reaches a western standard of living for larger proportions of there populations, unless technology can massively increase food production and we find alternate cheap sources of fuel to replace existing fuels like oil, then basic staples like food, etc are going to start to get very expensive, ditto for transport etc
The world can only sustain so many people, and people in the west have traditionally consumed the lions shares of resources, if you add another west in the east, you can see how demand is going to drive prices

What, strange to open an operation in a country that is falling over themselves to spend vast quantities of money on luxury goods from the West, a country where you will be able to generate enormous amounts of revenue for your company? Yes, I agree... most strange Chinas economy isn't based on being a low cost manufactureer anymore. Most western companies have wised up and moved production elsewhere to insure better quality and consistancy. Chinas economy is now largely self supporting.
The big problem I see in China is the rich/poor split. There are so many people in China with almost nothing, still living in poverty. Then in the big cities you see the wealthy side of China, where people love to pay top price for glossy bling and gadgets to show how affluent they are. It's a very conspicuous wealth and not pleasant to watch.
While I understand the drive to sell european products in China to the wealthy, personally, I don't like it. And companies who supply to China or sell in China are just supporting that dichotomy.

I watched a video on China recently and the 68 million empty apartments the country has because the poor can't afford to move in and there are not enough rich to occupy them...

The China bashers on here take note, that the 19th century was dominated by the British Empire, 20th century by the USA as a superpower and 21st century will/is China.
China controls or dominates:-
1. Raw material extraction in South America, African continent and Australia
2. America's 13 trillion dollar debt is mostly owed to China, just hope China never calls the debt in
3. They've bailed out, propped up numerous Western financial institutions
4. Manufacture most of the goods we use/wear, even if the goods are sold as Western brands, take acloser look and the 'Made in China' stamp is somewhere.
