Ultimately, this will suffer in the same way that a Bentley GT does - it looks great but you know it's a Phaeton underneath. Even if you think this looks great, you (and everyone else) will know it's a Touareg underneath. I'm afraid you are being blinded by the badge and the hype and the smoke and the mirrors without analysing what the reality is. What would possibly make more sense is a Lamborghini 3-series.

It's awesome. I want one. In fact, one just parked itself in my dream garage just between the SLS and Diablo, in the Hummer H1's old spot for no other reason than the vitriol in this thread. It would be like driving a massive middle finger on wheels. Love it.

What would possibly make more sense is a Lamborghini 3-series. The Continental GT is by far and away the most successful Bentley of all time in sales. Most people who drive them have no idea nor care that it shares some components with a VW they have never heard of or seen. In absolute sales terms the CGT sells about the same number of vehicles annually as VW sells Phaetons, it terms of turnover though the Bentley is far more important to VW. The platform shared by the two cars was almost certainly designed from day one with the Bentley application in mind, and I fail to see how the platform sharing has in any way compromised the CGT. The bits of the car you interact with (the interior, exterior and chassis set up) are designed specifically for the vehicle, the boring bits that you have very little to do with or can't see are engineered centrally so that the vehicle is more competitively price and reliable. I think the number of people driving away in their new Bentley secretly regretting that they didn't just buy the VW Phaeton is likely to be pretty low. The same will be true for the Lamborghini; they have good evidence there is a market for an SUV over the top price ceiling for that type £90,000. They have access to a platform that self evidently functions perfectly adequately as a super SUV in the form of the Cayenne. In terms of value the Urus will presumably out perform the Cayenne Turbo S at the cost of a slight degradation of off road ability. It will look substantially different, with a much more bespoke interior. For those that can afford the Urus is will offer them something substantially different and I suspect it will probably be a sales success (assuming it is realised similar to the concept).

Very rarely do you see a Cayenne being "driven" and I'm sure this will be the chelsea tractor of choice for the super rich. Shame really can we not have an update of the LM002, the concept LM400 I saw recently was quite cool and actually looked like the old one, shame this got the green light instead.

The Phaeton and Continetal GT might share the same platform but they don't sell in the same numbers... VW sells very few in the UK because it'll a lot of money for a VW. The CGT may sit on the same platform but that's where any similarity ends. The brands that share a platform will tune it in for their particular needs, characteristics. Different suspension components etc. What you see, touch, the quality of the interior of a CGT is on another level to that of a Phaeton. It's not like you get inside and bar the badges have no idea which car you're sat in.
The Urus isn't just going to be a Touareg with a different body dropped on top... The new MLB platform is already light than the current Touareg platform and the Urus will be a lighter, lower, completely different animal to the VW.
All this 'it's really just a Touareg underneath' is like saying Vanessa Feltz and Scarlett Johansson are the same with the top down!
As long as the Urus blows all other SUVs off the road and can stray 10 yards off road... Back of the net!

Daft thing is, I bet they could have sold that in the same quantities and made the same amount of money from the exact same demographic. By comparison the Urus is unforgiveably bland.

I don't suddenly see it as being anymore affordable to the masses than the Urus. At the end of the day wouldn't it be equally as pointless as the Urus/Cayenne etc except you like it? The LM400 would still sell to those same people you say would buy the Urus. And the super rich? The Urus isn't in the Veyron territory... Lambo are aiming at £150k... It's not cheap granted but someone worth £2-3 mIllion could easily have one on his shopping list to go with his other car, say a Bentley/Aston/Porsche/Lamborghini even. For the super rich is seriously wide of the mark.
