The 1st desirable Lotus since the S1 Exige.
Seems as good value as something like a GT3RS and probably offers similar performance and driving involvement.
Certainly more desirable than an Evora S at c.£65-70K (autocars longtermer was £73k!)... the Exige has a clear purpose.

That looks rubbish - looks cheap and like a toy car. The mk2 looked like an agressive machine that was very capable.
Disappointing to look at; for the sake of Lotus I hope it drives well.

Next they will drop a 5.0 V8 into the Evora, and slowly all the Paris cars will be forgotten.

LogicSnap said: i'll admit i am a lotus fan boy, but some of the comments on here are so.... jees I dont know, negative. Its like unles lotus make a car as fast as a veyron, that sounds like a F430, that costs the same as an elise did in 1996 and is as easy to get in and out of as a Skyline, that goes round a track like Radical then they have somehow failed? I just dont get it! In the journalists own words - the only thing close to this is a GT3 - how much were they new?
IMHO 53k isn't that much anyway - according to my trusty inflation calculator 53k is 35k in 1996 money... anyone know how much the original Exige was when it came out? I know it didnt come out in 1996 so there is going to be some movement but I would venture that credit crunch aside people have more disposable income now and it can be said its not vastly more expensive.
As for all the nay sayers re T/C intervention, every modern performance car bar the ultra track day cars have it - why are Lotus getting caned for it? Secondly not all of those manufactures let you turn everything off - if you didnt watch to the end, you can still have the Series 1 Exige experience by doing just that, turning all assistance off.
anyways, thats my 2p worth, well done Lotus, well done Matt for creating a great car, credit where credit is due, here's hoping I drive one onw day. I agree ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Maybe it just this continual weather making people miserable, but having got in from work and watched the video I scrolled down to read the comments expecting to see and most of what I find is !!!! What gives people?! Monkey Harris (owner of many a porsche inc a GT3RS) says it is great and nods towards car of the year, made in the uk, great value for the performance

First point, how do all the electronics compare to those in the Nissan GTR then? Not b hing, just wondering. The second is you carn't compare a new Exige with a second hand gt3, if you want to buy second hand, then wait and compare it with a second hand Exige (in a year or two) surely?

Looks good to me, Only the spectre of lotus's future wellbeing to muddy the water. I have my name down for a test drive at Bell and Colville when (IF) the demo car arrives.

What other car can you buy new with the same performance for 53k? Indeed, what NEW car is comparable for the price??? Seems like people have hopelessly unrealistic last century expectations as to how much something like this should cost. 50k it has to be said is bloody good value when you consider a posh German hatchback with a few options is getting on for 60k. Regards the open diff, I imagine it's probably due to a requirement of the electronic systems like on the Macca MP4? Also a bit more charisma in the engine department wouldn't go amiss. Surely this is easily remedied with some choice exhaust and induction tuning?

I think there has been a bit of a sea change on Pistonheads forums. Here is a car that is light, fast, driver focused and has a review that is rightly centred on what is, ostensibly, what this site is about, driving the car. However the overwhelming majority of posts are comments on it's looks, "fugly" and how "I would rather have X" etc. I really do think the looks of a car are important, and certainly no matter how well it drove I wouldn't buy something that really was ugly to my eyes, but it makes me wonder if the majority of posts are now one word epithets on it's looks that maybe the original ethos of Pistonheads is being lost on the newer readers..or maybe this happens to all sites that start up, gain a fan base then grow to include some that don't get the whole spirit of the thing...maybe..

^ Wow, that's one way to kill a thread.... Anyway, back on topic. Visually i love the look of it, apart from the headlights. Personally i don't see the issue with the price, what the f k do people expect for this kind of money for a performance driver focused car? I have no doubt it's as much fun to drive as a GT3. I guess for similar money, you could have a Merc SLK AMG, 2 seats, lots of power etc, but it's just not the same beyond those similarities. I wish Lotus well with sales, as i'd hate to see them shut up shop.

I have no allegiance to Lotus, however, I do like them as a brand. IMO this a seriously good looking car and (hear) handles like nothing else in it's class. These nay sayers need to take some time off as these are the people who are tainting the brand for others, in a way like MG Rover. All these people saying how s t they were with no real world experience and then complaining when they went bankrupt. I, For one, am excited for Lotus as this could potentially spell the beginning of a restart for them, possibly the beginning of their 5 year plan. This is something I really wish upon them as I do believe they deserve it.
