If it drives as it should and is presentable then buy it.

I sold mine for almost three times that albeit mine was the rarer '3'.

ETA

Oh and I believe clutch change is an engine out job iirc.

Is there any E34 Touring love left in the world - say a Supercharged 540i six speed running a shade under 400bhp.....

http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/66685-supercharged-1...

And here with my own puny 340bhp B10 4.6 Touring.....

Ooh, like that SC 540i, or at least the idea of it. Have you driven or passengered?
Driven and passengered - it is visceral; we both agreed the Alpina is a whole level smoother but also bloody quick, the S/C'd is probably quicker and at the top end, brutal; it has the advantage of a shorter diff than the standard languid E34 540i, and a six speed spanish with a short shift gear-change. It is a remarkably well put together thing needing a small amount of tidying here and there and were I not to presently own the E34 Alpina Touring the owner would have been counting my pennies all yesterday afternoon....

And the 2002 Tii... what a car
Agreed, delightful handling machines and the 130bhp engine was a gem smile

Cynical me says that if it was that good, they'd have MOT's it, swapped the tyres for Woosung Darkhorse Power Max Extreme, and one Linglong, and put it on their premium site?

Not quite an engine out job but you need to drop the box out and it's a James Hunt of a job.

I'd also be wary of it needing a Cambelt too

That would be my 'worry' too. Probably worth investigating though.

In fairness, it's a 20yr old French hatch with 100k+ on the clock. How could it be anything other than completely knackered?

indeed, but despite my principle of 2WD good, 4WD bad, I've got a real thing for the 996 4S. Best looking 996 IMO. In fact, one of the best looking 911s full stop.

996 always looks good in wide body form. Would you go a C4S over a Turbo though...

For anyone other than a driving god (ie not anyone on this forum of course) wouldnt a 4S be a safer bet than a 2S?

I went two or three years ago; it's a good day but, arguably, not for a sociable PHer who gets to ride in their friend's nice cars for free anyway.

Queue for an hour or so, pay £40 for a couple of laps in a Lambo driven at eight tenths; getting a passenger ride round Snet in Olly's CSL was more fun.

When 'pushing on' the c4s does tend to adopt a very under steer focused balance. Doesn't sound much fun, but trust me, lead wellies mid corner and the thing bites, picks up her skirt, and goes.
Would you feel as safe to do that in a turbo? Perhaps only Herr Rohl.
In anything other than bone dry conditions I'm sure a 4s would more than annoy a turbo.

A 2wd 911 is not going to spit you off and kill you at every opportunity, 996 onwards are actually very benign and easy to move around at the limit. I see a young mother each morning taking her child to school in a 2wd 997 wink
