Enjoy your summer pint, but...

what kind of job did you do? you say you had a tailored suit and a long boozy lunch, that sounds like a city/professional type job. Cant understand why losing your licence would lose you a job like that, know a few ppl in professional services that have been done and kept working. its not like you cant afford taxis...
OP for all this to have happened to you suggests this must have happened maybe a couple of years ago.
Why have you suddenly decided to post about it, it can't be through guilt or the sudden discovery of a conscience surely?
Seems like a bit of propaganda to me, and tells us nothing we don't already know about drink driving, after all we are all petrol heads who would never even consider it, aren't we?
And I thought posting under a different identity was frowned upon. Hey ho.

It seems that my original posting has been torn to threads because some people seem to think that i was suggesting banning drinking altogether which isn't what I said.
I am sensible enough to understand that the drink drink problem will never be irradiated however I feel that the deterents should be stiffer.
So worse then a 12 month ban for a first offence and jail if you don't learn your lessonI am sensible enough to understand that the drink drink problem will never be irradiated however I feel that the deterents should be stiffer.
I suggested a 2 year ban for first offence but that didn't seem to go down too well. I don't know what the solution is - neither do most other people judging by the lack of sensible suggestions that were made.
All I seemed to get was abuse & accusations that I was trying to stop people drinking altogether!
Which was not what I said. I did however say I wasn't going to post on this thread again so I won't. Probably.

Moral of the story don't get drunk then decide to drive, then let "friends" influence you to do a spectacular launch from the pub. If you do decide to do a spectacular launch make sure you don't go spazzing in to another car.
Because if you do everyone who loves you will hate you, you will have no friends, no job, prospects, be made homeless and financially ruined.
Maybe the op wouldn't have made such decisions if he had just been loved and supported properly by his parents when growing up.

I'd better contact the mods then as someone using your account suggested we have a zero level drink drive limitAll I seemed to get was abuse & accusations that I was trying to stop people drinking altogether!

The easiest way to deal with drink driving is this - a zero limit.
That way there can be no argument at all. You drink, you get stopped & you fail the breathaliser even if you have had only a half pint.
No saying 'i have only had a couple so i thought i would be alright to drive' etc etc etc.
If the limit was zero that would put an end to all of the crap & myths surrounding drinking & driving.
I would also make the minimum ban 24 months & not 12 months, & have a minimum fine of £2k.
Harsh? Maybe. However the current 'deterents' are obviously not working so maybe now is the time to be a little more draconian.

Lifetime driving ban for drink driving offense.
Is this post, sensible as it is, going to be torn to shreds? I must admit I hadn't thought of that as a deterrent. It's all too simplistic.

I give up!
I agree with most of your sentiment. Maybe there should be a sliding scale, dependent upon the level. Difficult problem there is proving the level at the time of the offence. Driving ban for 12 months is too short for some one three times the limit.I personally know what a driving ban feels like, as i had to stop for 18 months. At the time it felt like my world had fallen apart but four years later it is just water under the bridge.
There must be research somewhere that either proves or disproves the correlation between crime rate versus severity of punishment.

Good, stop posting all this authoritarian bks.
What exactly is wrong with the current system?
The point I have been trying to make is that the current system doesn't appear to work very well. I'm not posting any authoritarian bks as you so eloquently put it. At least I don't think I am. Merely trying to get some sensible answers or suggestions which appear somewhat thin on the ground. What exactly is wrong with the current system?
