RE: SOTW: Volvo 480 Turbo

i used to really like these and as a motor trader is one of the few cars i did not get round to buy and sell.
very rare now, I did not remember only 120bhp, back then that was enough, now its standard on the smallest cars and 225bhp upwards is easily available on mtd range sporty cars

All these mentions of "Daf" reminded me of some trivia,
The name for eighties/early nineties band "The New Fast Automatic Daffodils" were taken from the promotional material for the cars, they got lumped in with the Baggy/Madchester thing but weren't really of that ilk, this was their main track and very distinctive it is too (John Peel moment there), remember cruising to this in my MK1 Golf GTi.

Oh, and good, leftfield shedding there, these had an upmarket image at the time, quite classy, usually 30 something professional women, if the Scirroco wasnt the Scirroco of its day it would be the Scirroco of its day

I like these, though it probably stems from a childhood spent in Volvo dealers in the 80s whole my family bought or serviced a line of 340s! They were never that popular, seen as ugly at the time, had electrical glitches, and probably a bit underpowered and not very sporty... but I'd have considered one!
These were new out around the time we went to pick up my Dad's new 360GLT from Newton-le-Willows Volvo in the late 80's. They seemed so out of place with everything else in the showroom. Obviously Dad had bought the wrong car, but he wouldn't listen.
If I needed a cheap knock-around for a few months, I could think of far worse to tax. Just under 120hp though, not 110.
Got me looking, as shed often does, at what else is out there with these. I must have missed this limited edition Citroen collaboration. Must have swapped out the Renault engine

Made at the former DAF factory in the Netherlands that went on to make the V40 (and the Mitsu Carisma) - now NedCar
Yes I worked at Philips (Sittard) next to Nedcar in the mid 90's and all the local Dutch drove 440-480's or the older DAF 33's. Unfortunately the Southern Netherlands doesn't have the adverse weather of Sweden (240-740 etc were built), my personal belief in the build quality and rust relates to location of build. Upto a few years ago Southern European cars were never really noted for rust proofing! and yes the south of the Netherlands isn't Southern Europe but's certainly not Northern Sweden!Hammerhead said:
Ovlov factoid: Turbo was rated at 120bhp, not 110 as stated in the original article. The ES was rated at 109bhp for the 1.7 lump.
I remember hinking that these we nicely left-field at the time, but when I found that "Turbo" meant an additional dozen or so bhp, I was badly let down.At least the other turbo cars of the era (Maestro/Montego, Audi Quattro, Renault 21, Escort RS etc etc) managed to get a useful gain from bolting a blower on. Heck, even my Metro Turbo managed a healthy 90-something bhp from its blown A-series compared with 60-ish from the N/A lump.
Still - it's a rare car now (around 130 left in the UK), so from that perspective alone, its worthy of joining the hallowed ranks of SOTW

Just like a previous Ph'r said earlier a mate of mine had one and it looked cooler than a penguins nadger. It didn't drive so well and if the article is correct with 110 bhp I'm not surprised
My mate replaced his with a TR
I prefered the Volvo
Those "weak" 120Hp result out of Volvo and Porsche
collaborating on one of the first "soft" Turbos.
Resulting not so much in a spike of HP but in a
broad, usable band of torques.
Those soft turbos are all the rage now for the reduction of
fuel consumption and emissions. Only Volvo and SAab
did it back then, but it didn't catch on, obviously.
