RE: Spotted: Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black Series
Discussion
There is a lot of misinformation regarding this car . The clk black was not a slightly modded merc . I am an enthusiastic 2 time owner and know the cars inside out .
It had fully adjustable custom suspension , a seam welded and triangulated chassis . Bespoke diff , oil cooler , battery and other things moved around to improve weight distribution , removal of airbags ( door ) , bespoke interior carbon , bespoke rear axle and the most industrial / evil body kit ( including composite wings) on any coupe ever not forgetting black series specific engine , and tcu mapping .
I have been working with MKB in germany on my car , it now has a faster shifting gearbox that blips on downshifts ( as well as fifty odd extra horses ) .
The Americans have been trying to crack this for years but Mkb cracked it . The car is even better now it's tremendous almost illegal fun . Any black series owners interested in these modifications i can put you in touch with hermann directly ( no affiliation ) . Finally when you are not in the mood it's a nice reasonably comfy merc with auto box, I pod , bluetooth and sat nav . I love the blik serious it is king Amg for me .

Fascinated by the gearbox mods. Did they manage to reprogramme an existing control unit or was it necessary to take a new one to make the blipper? With the gearbox sorted, this would be a very special car. It had fully adjustable custom suspension , a seam welded and triangulated chassis . The car is just fantastic now , it took six moths of work and testing ( it's tuv approved and has a warranty ) . Other cars are easy to modify now , I was the first that's why it took so long . I was very impressed they are very thorough .
While it was there I couldn't resist headers , exhaust and remap .
You thought it used to hang , mate you need to try it now . It hangs for England .

I was sold anyway. ^^^Totally sold now. It had fully adjustable custom suspension , a seam welded and triangulated chassis . I bought one of these brand new off Mercedes Liverpool approaching xmass 2007. It was stickered 106k, I paid 99k. I did 11,000 miles in it in the next 6 months and then sold it for 89k. I used it as my daily car, commuting in and out of Liverpool, knocking around the city between offices and then heading to Snowdonia or the Lake District at the weekends, depending on which hill I wanted to climb.
It was on it's 4th set of rears when i sold it.
The engine loosened up and got much better as the miles ticked by. By 5,000 miles it was decently fast. The brakes were great. The front end turn in was great. The sound was amazing. The ride around town was absolutely fine. The cockpit was pure class and quality. The auto box around town was smooth as you like. When pressing on and using the paddles the upshifts were fine and the downshifts could be lived with once i'd learned that you must wait for each command to be executed before you give it another. No point in stamping on the brakes and tapping the paddle 3 times, it would only change once. So stamp on the brakes and tap the paddle, wait for the downshift, then tap the paddle again. Suddenly, no problem with the gearbox. But a blip would have been nice. Or you just learn to use the sudden reverse torque to back it in. All these moans and gripes, usually by people who only drove the car for a day or two on a road test, were not a problem unless you wanted them to be.
The car was superb and came with a massive feel good factor as standard.
So why did I sell it?
2 reasons: With the mileage I was putting on it I thought it would depreciate to about 50k. I couldn't afford to lose that much. And the only real gripe I had with the dynamics was a computer issue which drove me mad and nearly crashed me a few times. I always drive with all systems off and did in that car. It was a joy to slide around, there is so much torque and so much feel of the diff and axle coming onto and into a slide that it was addictive to drive at a jaunty angle. Very similar in feel when coming onto a slide as the M3CSL i had previously, and the current V8 M3. However, even with everything switched off, when the angle of slide got to a specific point the computer said 'Whoa big boy, enough's enough" and killed the power or stamped on the rear brakes or whatever it does, the result being a sudden grip of the back tyres which is not what you want when you've got a decent amount of oppo on. Picture turning left off a round about at 50mph, you open the throttle, the back moves to the right, quite a lot, you steer to the right, quite a lot, then the computer tells the car to stop smoking and to grip, but you've got a full turn of right lock on and you're now doing 65 and the car dives 10 feet to the right, you catch it just before it goes through the brick wall and then have quarter of a second to get it back to your own side of the road before you're wearing the front of a bus. If you're good, you'll manage to do all this quick enough and accurate enough to avoid over correcting and starting the mother of all tank slappers.
I learned just to what angle the car could be slid. But at the back of my mind I always knew that I wasn't a free man. Couldn't stand that, so the car went.
