You can probably disable the DRLs if you wish, which is what I'd do if I had a newer car with that awful (IMO!) feature!
I would too but then there are so few modern cars I would buy now because of visibility issues, it becomes irrelevant.

Actually, I kind of liked the DRLs. Seems I'm in a minority there! They were standard fit at least ... I'd only ever down badge a car; never bling it up.

I was joking about being insulted, for those who took offence. I'll take all the insults you can throw, or I wouldn't have posted! smile

So, DRLs are bad then? I kinda liked the safety feature on gloomy days.

DRLs are always a bone of contention and the arguments are against blinding, looking away and "safety" - on which basis no-one will mind me going round on full beam 24-7... wink

Some people think that they are a distraction, some that they are 'Chavy', others just don't like the look.

Personally I couldn't give two hoots, although I am all for anything that means my car will be easier to spot for Doris who is about to pull out infront of me on a gloomy day.

The DRL's come on automatically, I've no problem with that.

If you had then made the conscious decision to switch your front foglights on rather than dipped headlights I'd say the kid in the other car has assessed you pretty accurately.

edit - Misread OP. If you've fitted aftermarket DRL's then he was right too.

Any aftermarket lights which aren't KC daylighters or a big Cibie bolted to the rear bumper of a Mk2 Escort look bloody awful.

Yea they are safe, they make you stand out, it's a case of being seen rather than being able to see with them.

Hence why pretty much all cars are fitted with SIDELIGHTS for those 'gloomy days'.

It's only with recent intervention from the safety boffins that all new cars have to be fitted with dhead running lights, because we are turning into a species too stupid to recognise the weather conditions on the other side of a clear windscreen.

Personally, I use the sidelights on my 8-year-old car when it's too gloomy...

The trouble with DRLs is that it creates a bit of an "arms race" much like bigger and bigger cars.

If every car has bright lights on, then more vulnerable road users like motorbikes lose the additional benefit of having a headlight on...

I think you've missed the point there OP, the chap was plainly impressed by your choice of motor and understood it had more power than the typical 1.9 TDI company cars. His hand motion was dictated at your seatbelt, it's a powerful car so you need to make sure you're strapped in properly.

The level of insults in this forum are incredible. You know, if I'd wanted to be insulted, I could have just gone round to my in-laws ... it would have been much easier, and I'd have had tea made for me.
At the time of this post, the insults were pretty poor IMHO - wait for the night crowd...

An '06 Audi you say? They didn't fit DRL's back then did they? So perhaps he was showing his distaste at someone who would retro-fit EU fairy lights to their car?

Just a thought! biggrin
Yes they did factory fit DRLs back then actually. I've got the same model year S6 as the OP and mine have the DRLs as well.

In that case in answer to your original question, it's because he thinks you are a wker who drives an Audi wink

Surprised you felt the need to ask really.

Tonka toys and original Minis can also be permitted to run these.

I would agree with someone on the first page that said about the Clarkson thing. You would think people could make their own assumptions, but sadly, after reading this forum for years, it appears that even "car" people take him at his word. How many stereotypical post are there about BMW drivers? Some people are just sheep. (que more bmw comments).

The other obvious answer is envy!

Obvious only to Audi drivers who deperately want to believe that they drive something special so choose to believe other people envy them.

Apropos of nothing, but what's with the sign Northbound on the M40 Jcn 9 exhorting me to plan my journey and arrive on time for Olympic events?

A quick drive past "The Gay By" or " Gobblers Gulch" as it is known locally.

Agreed, although given most bikers seem to think that 'High' is the only setting for this day or night theirs will still be brighter and of course there will be only one!

You would not believe the number of times I have recited in my head (whilst pressing middle pedal to the floor) "Of course you didn't see me coming, it's not like I'm driving a fricking BRIGHT YELLOW car is it?"
