I'm not knocking the fact that Toyobaru have created a car for driving enjoyment, and not reliant on brute power for that matter too, but looks cost little extra so why not inject some sparkle into the way it looks? The same has to be said for the interior too, i mean come on, plastic fantastic, they haven't even succeeded in ripping off any Euro styling this time either.

Also, if the Toyobaru is so great on a B road, that must mean the MX-5 is too. All for about £5k less...

Congratulations Suboyota, you have created a roofed S2000 with less power and nearly as peaky power delivery but without the fun and twelve years behind Honda vtec.
erm so how else would you get this kind of power of out a 4 pot n/a motor?? confused

Also what exactly is wrong with making a 2+2 affordable coupe with near s2k levels of performance?

true, but it does mean I can take the kids to school and then use it, which means it stands a 100% more chance of me buying it, and I dont really want a 3 series coupe do I?

Always gets me when people base a car on its straight line speed alone, too many pub/keyboard warriors on PH these days.
The difference in lap times is approximately 2.5 sec. I am guessing the MX-5 is also wearing tastier rubber than the Prius eco tires the Toyobaru comes standard with. IMHO, best guess is it's at least 5 sec faster on that track over 1 lap if you put them on comparable rubber.

Problem with talking about putting better rubber on is you are pushing the price up further and few people are going to bin the dealer set of tyres.

It did help that the MX5 had its esc completely turned off and both Toyoburus had theirs on through most of the race.

The gt86 does look like it's the livelier of the two!

Rubbish - Toybaru have created a car that's slower than an F1 car - What a crock of ste! biggrin

In reality, great to see someone (other than Mazda) build a car with the main aim of driving enjoyment!

If only one of the mainstream European or US-based manufacturers could do this.

Correct sir!

I'm so glad this exists. Think i'll be picking one of these up in a few years to rag the absolute tits out of around various tracks. The term 'ringpiece comes to mind; and i'm not on about the one between your ass-cheeks.

Love the video, missed Best Driving. Great comparison too - demonstrates quite succinctly that the Toyobaru is a good match for the MX-5 for fun with the practicality of two rear seats and a roof to make it an only car / everyday car that the MX-5 simply can' do well enought for many people. As others, just disappointed at the styling but assume they're holding back at launch for more visually interesting higher powered versions?

All that test showed me is that 6-7 grand more than a MX5 is a lot for 2 more seats and a small straight line performance increase. That and the fact the Toybaru is aesthetically challenged makes it in my eye not good value. MX5 still looks untroubled in the first/cheap RWD sports car market to me IMO

Good vid!! To be honest, i thought the gap between the mx5 and toyburu's would have been a bit bigger than that. Im guessing here, but they probably weigh the same? 1200kgs roughly, the toyburu's 200bhp, the mx5 160bhp??

a better test would have been against an RX8 ( yes i know its not in production anymore - but hey, its not ancient!).

Im really tempted by one of these, it will boil down to who offers the better finance deals.

Could someone point me towards a new RWD 2+2 coupe with more than 200bhp for around £25k or less?
25k will buy you a brand new M Spec BMW 125i.

A grand more for 123d.

Non RWD:

Audi TT
Scirocco
Mini JCW

My 25k?

Brand new Clio 200 cup

10k MX5

I am so glad that people are now looking at this pair of (virtually) identical cars more critically. Aside from the fact that Toyota has stuck its neck out, a little bit, and built a car that is not a dull hatchback/4x4/hybrid I see nothing to get very excited about. If they had been conceived 5 years ago, then perhaps there would be something to celebrate, otherwise the limited daylight between them and the MX5 (despite a >10% power to weight advantage) over several laps tells you all you need to know.

Those looking for an enjoyable rear wheel drive bargain in 3 years time, feel free to rub your hands together. That is a victory for heavy depreciation - not automotive progress.

Emperor's new clothes.

yet amazingly even fewer are going to enter into any form of circuit racing where lap times are actually important. So who really gives a chuff? If you're into track days you'll get through tyres quick enough to swap and change anyhow.

Watching the video made me really want an MX-5. I've no doubt that the GT86 / BRZ are great cars but so is the MX-5.
