RE: Time for Tea? BR-Z and GT-86 take on MX-5

We thought that Japanese motoring video series Best Motoring was dead and buried, but we couldn't be more glad to have been proven wrong.
Time for Tea? BRZ and GT-86 take on MX-5
Of course, what you really want to know is whether the Toyota or the Subaru is fastest...
How so? Well, although it's not under the Best Motoring banner, Tsuchiya-san and friends are back, and the perfect subject for the return of our occasional 'Time for Tea' displacement activity video feature.
Their chosen weapons for this particular three-lap battle of the East Course at Motegi in Japan are the Mazda MX-5, Toyota GT-86 and Subaru BRZ. The MX-5, of course, succumbs to the Toyobaru pair, but the real intrigue is whether the BRZ or GT-86, which we now know to be moreor less identical on price, can come out on top.
We won't spoil the video by giving you the result of that particular contest... you'll just have to make yourself a cup of the hot caffeinated stuff, sit back, and click 'play' to find out...

Er, has nobody noticed that the Toyobarus have to be worked really hard to get past the 'girly' MX-5. So, apart from the lack of masculinity, surely owning a good looking soft top is a better bet that owning one of the most uninspiring, badly styled and bland cars to come onto the market? Besides, the MX-5 would be much more attractive to the opposite sex whilst clearly being pretty nifty around a track.
Doesn't matter whether you put a Toyota badge or Subaru badge on the bonnet, it's still about as undesirable as it can get.

So the Toyobaru is less desirable than say a...diahatsu copen? A pink nissan micra cc? Ok it might not be the best looking or the quickest but as far as I'm aware they aren't very expensive either. Surely as something thats relatively practical, reasonably priced, smart looking coupe and a hoot on a british B road the toyobaru is pretty desirable.Doesn't matter whether you put a Toyota badge or Subaru badge on the bonnet, it's still about as undesirable as it can get.
I'm obviously not alone in being surprised at how little faster the Toyobaru pair are than the MX-5. Does make you wonder, and the Mazda still looks like the last true driver's bargain out there.
On another note, the guy in the 86 is clearly the better driver of the two Toyobaru chaps. Maybe some of it is in the different suspension setups... but it's probably more about the men at the wheels.

Congratulations Suboyota, you have created a roofed S2000 with less power and nearly as peaky power delivery but without the fun and twelve years behind Honda vtec.
+1 as much as i love the fact that subaru and toyota can build a fun car in these austere times, it's slower than a s2000 and not that much quicker than a mx-5..........Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
