It's an old mans car; like every other volvo. Spend your cash on a gti, type r or st instead.

I've got round to reading the advert, I wouldn't buy that one. The CD player is an intergrated into the dash item, which could be damn expensive to fix. You might not choose to, but you will still get beaten up for it when you come to sell.

Edit: Actually, further research shows you can pick a second hand CD player off a well know internet auction site for £100, no multis at the minute, but I can't imagine they cost a lot more. But it apparently needs to be coded to the car systems at Volvo.

Not cool, unlike the S60 T5 it has no police pedigree. The older S40 T4 was cooler than this, and that isn't saying much (unless it was in that bright blue colour).

Volvo are an odd company when it comes to cool, they were so staid that when the T5 first came out it was like an accountant having a mid-life crisis. Those yellow estates were sold off the back of touring car performances, police cars and generally being a bit mental.

The funny thing is that this particular Swedish accountant has, like many Scandinavians, the schizophrenic outlook of a conservative viking metalhead. From the early days of rallying their nice saloons down mountainsides, through the 900 and 480 turbos and on to the original T5's they've always had a left field thing going on despite the sobriety of their other cars.

For the above reasons I'll always have a soft spot for Volvo, though if I ever buy one I may have to buy a dull grey suit and cut my hair in to a combover - If only so I can open the window and have the combover rise in to the air as I burn off some chav at the lights.

I'm 19 and have an S60 T5 so I'm probably qualified to answer your original question, and the answer is an unequivocal no - it's not a 'cool' car. The first question I invariably get asked is "is it your dad's?" along with a fair bit of ridicule from the mates. Then again, at the end of the day I'd take the S60 T5 over what they drive any day of the week.

I believe the S40 has the Focus chassis so it's not a bad starting point, but apparently they're a bit wooden in comparison to the ST (same engine). Never driven one though so can't give any more detail.
I had a C70 T5 at 19 and got loads of grief off my mates, however they were all in corsa's, saxo's and the likes which at best were a 1.2, needless to say the fun making and name calling soon stopped when it was realised what I had under the bonnet. At the time was dirt cheap to insure, thats why I got it and nothing went wrong in the 50k miles I did in it.

The S40/Focus debate, they are extremely different cars underneath regardless of the obvious parts sharing, i.e engine/suspension, some and its a loose some of the chassis is the same but not a lot.

Define "Cool" though?

As above, to the untrained eye/uncouth it may be an "old-mans car", until it shows them a clean pair of heels. Or the stereo drowns out the tinny aftermarket affair from a Halfords clearance sale. I think it is a PH rule that "sleepers" are cool.

Although I've spent most of the last 8 years in D5 Volvos of various flavours, I have driven the S40, S60 and V70 T5s at various points, and can't add much more than what has already been said. Solid, rapid, comfortable, practical, well designed and rapid. Again.
I've done over 250,000 miles in that time, and besides routine maintenance I've had a wiper motor failure, a minor ECU fault, a snapped seat rail and a loose brake disc cover. Maybe a few other problems, but I'm genuinely struggling to remember anything more significant. Running costs have been nothing out of the ordinary - although most have been company cars, I have seen the servicing bills, and my current XC90 has been no more pricey to run than a typical mid-range family car.

The only thing I would be wary of is front tyre wear - it is a big heavy lump driving the front wheels with vigour after all, and in the case of my D5 variants, the turning circle is nothing impressive due to the width of the engine block.

But try one for yourself, and make your own mind up. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Cool? I don't think so, not for your age group.
Would you own one? Definitely, looks modern, great engine, spec etc.

Would I care about what my type-S, Zetec S, Mx5, yes I did say Mx5 driving mates said about it... no.

I'm 24 and have a V40 T4 estate, it is honestly the business.

Nice and fast, heated seats are great in the winter, good stereo with a factory fitted sub in the boot!

My 20 year old brother has just bought this T4 on the back of how good mine is and he loves it.

I used to have a WRX impreza, but would rather have a fast Volvo anyday, cheap insurance and does 30-40 MPG when no booting it

Cool car? No.

Good car? Yes.

IMHO someone who buys something because it is a 'young man's car' like a GTi or Type R etc is compensating for something - lots of show,.

Then think what a sleeper/q car says about you. There is a lot to be said for ability and understatement.

I think Volvo's are cool, particularly T5's but I'm not cool and don't care if I'm cool or not.

Perhaps there's a certain coolness to not caring if you're cool or not.

That's precisely it for me. Cool is not people swooning the first time you roll up in your new flash motor. Cool is when 2 or 3 months down the line people realise that your left field choice of car, that they would never have even considered, is better than theirs in nearly every respect.

No.

That shape of S40 always looks like it's happy face is asking its father if it'll be a real saloon car when it grows up. Very odd proportions to my eyes.

Pretty much all of the larger ones are pretty cool though.

ETA: And the S40 T4, which had it's own look.

I'm 18 and drive an A4 1.8T S-Line saloon. While the mates take the piss for having a 'family car', once you're 5 up bombing along at 120mph with ease, it suddenly becomes a very cool car compared to the 1.0 st boxes they drive that struggle to hit 90.

Ordinarily, i would agree with this sentiment. However, the very fact that the OP is asking if it's a 'cool' car or not, obviously it means a great deal.

I would say buy it, but if you're too sensitive to handle the enivitable, small-minded taunts of "why are you driving your dad's car?" and "why the hell have you bought a Volvo?" then perhaps you should follow the crowd? Otherwise - buy what you want!
